Android to overtake iPad in 2013 as price becomes decision point

Apple better have enjoyed its time at the tablet top spot. Android's coming to take the iPad's perch, at least according to one analyst.

The iPad has been the king of the tablet market for some time now. It sold 100 million units since its debut in 2010, when it dominated with a 87 percent market share, according to the International Data Corporation (IDC).

At a recent press conference, Apple CEO Tim Cook said the iPad accounts for 91 percent of all tablet web traffic. A pretty impressive stat, but no one stays on top forever.

Sometime in mid-2013, Android tablet sales will surpass the iPad according to projections by Sameer Singh, an analyst with Finvista Advisors, a mergers and acquisitions consulting group in a recent Tech-Thoughts blog post.

"However, we believe the mini's relatively high $329 (UK£269, AUD$369) starting price leaves plenty of room for Android vendors to build upon the success they achieved in the third quarter."

Galaxy S4 with Full HD Super AMOLED display to show up at CES?

Samsung might be pulling out all the stops at CES 2013, at least according to a rumor coming out of Korea.

The firm might unveil a phone loaded with a 4.99-inch Full HD Super AMOLED display at the Vegas show, one that rivals devices coming out of HTC, LG, Sharp and Sony.

According to a Samsung official speaking to a Korean newspaper, the company will pull out a handset featuring the ultra-thin AMOLED material and a screen with a 441 pixel per inch density.

Such blockbuster screen specs are likely to only show up on a blockbuster handset, pointing to the possibility that the main attraction Samsung offers the CES crowd is the Galaxy S4.

According to the paper's source, Samsung is using its current mass production method mixed with advanced LITI technology to bring the phone to life.

It should feature a resolution of 1920 X 1080 and if kinks in mass production scaling can get ironed out, the S4 should arrive during the second quarter of 2013.

The source also reportedly said that the head of Samsung Electronics demanded the SIV feature a Full HD AMOLED display and not (yawn) LCD, giving it a unique selling point over new arrivals like the Droid DNA, the rumored Sony Yuga and Odin and Sharp's Aquos SH903W.

Leaked Nokia slide looks to confirm new Windows Phone 7.8 features

The internet got some official looking confirmation for the new features supposedly coming to Windows Phone 7.8 Friday.

The source of the info is reportedly a slide from Nokia training material. And, even though it's in Chinese, a translation outlines the features that should come with the update.

There have been all sorts of rumors surrounding what Windows Phone 7.8 owners will see once their phones upgrade, but this is the first sighting of anything official with talk of the new features.

Microsoft, by the way, has promised those with older Windows OSes (and not the most recent Windows Phone 8 OS) to keep their phones current with updates, so this could be a sign the Softies weren't just blowing hot air.

You can teach an old phone new tricks

The slide lays out a new start screen for Windows Phone 7.8, while three live tiles sizes are available to let owners give their phones a unique, personalized feel.

The update brings 20 more themes to match what's available in WP8. Users can also plaster their lock screens with Bing wallpapers instead

Dropbox Hits 100 Million Users

Dropbox now has 100 million users.

Drew Houston, the company’s founder and CEO, took to the Dropbox blog to announce the milestone, touting how far the cloud storage company has come in the five years since he came up with the idea for the company because “I forgot my USB stick at home.”

Since then, Dropbox has raised $250 million in venture funding and is said to be valued at around $4 billion. Dropbox has also faced some pretty stiff competition in recent years, from startups like Box and SugarSync, as well as from tech titans like Apple, Microsoft and Google, all of which have launched their own cloud storage features.

Foxconn starts replacing workers with robots

Your next iPhone could be made by robots.

That's because Taiwanese manufacturer Foxconn has reportedly started replacing workers on its assembly line with machines designed to do the same task.

Founder and chairman Terry Gou told employees of the plans at a dance in July 2011. According to Gou, using robots should improve efficiency and counter rising labour costs.

The 'Foxbots', as they're known, have started arriving in at least one factory, with another 20,000 due before the end of the year. They cost between $20,000 and $25,000 each to produce. That's around three times what the average Foxconn employee earns in a year.

BlackBerry Messenger gets free voice chat feature

BlackBerry owners are now able to voice chat with each other for free over BlackBerry Messenger.

The new feature, included in the BBM 7 update for the popular service, allows users to talk free-of-charge provided they are connected to a Wi-Fi network.

This addition will be welcomed by those with top-up phones and the frugal alike, as well as those travelling abroad and those who live in far-flung corners of the country where network signal is lacking.

A 'split-screen' functionality has been integrated into the service to allow BBMers to switch between text and voice chat at will, or use both together simultaneously. Handy when sending pictures…and perhaps in situations where there's more to tell than you can let on over the phone.

BBM 7 also allows BlackBerry owners to use other functions of their device while in voice chat, such as reading texts and emails and navigating through apps.

Google Fiber is live in Kansas City, real-world speeds at 700Mbps

After months of fanfare and anticipation, gigabit home Internet service Google Fiber finally went live on Tuesday in Kansas City. The search giant is offering 1Gbps speeds for just $70 per month—significantly faster and cheaper than what any traditional American ISPs are offering.

"We just got it today and I’ve been stuck in front of my laptop for the last few hours," Mike Demarais, founder of Threedee, told Ars. "It’s unbelievable. I’m probably not going to leave the house."

He lives in a four-bedroom house run by "Homes For Hackers" on Kansas City’s Hanover Heights neighborhood, just on the state border with Missouri. The house has become one of the hubs for the KC Startup Village, an informal group of entrepreneurs who have clustered around homes immediately eligible for Google Fiber.

Halo 4 Day-One Sales Hit $220 Million, Outselling Box Office Titans

In a year when Hollywood is rolling out its biggest blockbusters, one video game has eclipsed them all. “Halo 4” is on track to reach $300 million in global sales in the first week, making it the biggest “Halo” launch in history and the biggest entertainment launch of the year to date. In the first 24 hours of its release, “Halo 4” garnered more than $220 million worldwide, eclipsing the record for the biggest day-one opening in U.S. box office history, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2,” and the biggest movie of 2012, “The Avengers” – based on U.S. sales alone.

Halo 3 reportedly cost $60 Million to develop and advertise, which makes it one of the most expensive games ever produced. Apparently, Halo 4's budget is quite a bit larger than that.

Nexus 4 sells out in U.K. on Google Play as site suffers

Google's latest smartphone, the Nexus 4, is sold out in the U.K., less than an hour after it went on sale.

The 4.7-inch Android device went on sale in the U.K. on Tuesday, alongside Google's two latest tablets, the Nexus 7 and Nexus 10 -- and it looks like the devices are proving popular. According to reports on Twitter, some customers found that stocks of lowest priced Nexus 4, the 8GB version, had been snapped up within a mere 15 minutes of going on sale.

As consumers headed to the Google Play store to order their devices this morning, the online shop appears to be struggling to cope with demand. Some would-be buyers have taken to Twitter to complain that Google Play is slow, unresponsive, throwing up errors or that, by the time they've navigated the problems with the site, the entire stock of the product they went there to buy is sold out.

At the time of writing, Google Play appears to be showing the 8GB and 16GB versions of the Nexus 4 as out of stock

Apple to Begin Trial Production of iPhone 5S for Earlier Than Expected Launch?

DigiTimes relays a report coming from a Chinese-language Commercial Times report. In it, the Commercial Times claims that Apple will begin trial production of the iPhone 5S as early as December.

Facing low yield rates in the production of iPhone 5, Apple has accelerated the certification processes for related parts and components for the iPhone 5S, the paper revealed.

McDonald’s Records Conversations for “Quality Assurance Purposes”

David Litchfield of security firm Acuvant reveals that the McDonald’s from Sydney Airport records its customers’ conversations.

“Your conversations will be audio and video recorded for quality assurance purposes,” reads a sign at the entrance.

Although it might be a good thing that the company is trying to offer quality services to customers, one can’t help but wonder about the privacy implications of such practices.

Windows 8 protected from 85% of malware detected in the past six months, right out the box

Now that Windows 8 is on sale and has already been purchased by millions, expect very close scrutiny of Microsoft’s latest and greatest security features. 0-day vulnerabilities are already being claimed, but what about the malware that’s already out there? Windows 8 certainly isn’t perfect, but it’s definitely come a long way.

Security firm BitDefender ran a very interesting test recently: the company took 385 of the most popular malware samples it found in the past six months and threw them at Windows 8 to see how it fares in its default state (with Windows Defender enabled).

Only 61 malware threats managed to infect Windows 7′s successor, or about 15.84 percent. BitDefender rounded this down and declared that the “Newly launched Window 8 is prone to infection by some 15 per cent of the 100 malware families most used by cyber criminals this year.” I prefer the reverse number, as you can see in the headline above.

The hydrogen goes into a water filter for purification, which then gets pushed into the gas cylinder.
