One of the most difficult things for a new Christian to come to terms with is the fact that we are saved through faith in Christ. That's it. There's nothing we can "do" to attain salvation. It's a difficult knot to un-tie because we are predisposed to think that anything we achieve has to be earned. The plain fact is that our salvation was earned by Jesus Christ, who died on a cross for our sins. Instead of scratching our heads over salvation through faith - we should rejoice in it! That's the theme of Romans chapter four - one of the most important chapters in the entire Bible.
