Have you ever thought about what happens when you share your story? It does so much not only for the ones who hear it, but also for ourselves. Today, I’ve invited my dear friends Darbi Jilek and Kaitlin Shierry of Say So Podcast to talk to us about their journey with sharing their own stories and the platform they’ve now built to empower others to share their stories as well!

  • 58. How to Ask for Help (And Help Yourself) (ft. LaQuetta Dawson)

“No one benefits from you running on empty.” In recent years, the phrase “self care” has become more and more popular, but what does it actually mean and how do we actually do it? Today we’re talking to Christian marriage and family therapist, LaQuetta Dawson, about why it’s so important to care for ourselves. As we’ve said on the show before, you can’t pour from an empty cup. When you are cared for, you can better care for the people around you. I can’t wait for you to hear this conversation! I hope it leaves you as encouraged and inspired as it did for me.

  • 57. Why New Years Resolutions Don't Work

Today we’re breaking down one of my pet peeves: New Years Resolutions. Okay, let’s be honest, who else has ever made a New Years resolution and not followed through? *raising both my hands* So, what’s the deal? The problem is, a lot of people try to make changes starting with their behavior by attempting to quit habits cold turkey or start something new without first changing their mindset. For example, if you want to eat healthier, that’s an amazing goal! However, if you don’t change your thoughts first, you’ll probably end up in the same vicious cycle of shame-based actions and feeling defeated. Healthy habits can’t hold their weight under a toxic mindset. I didn’t say easy - because let’s be real, mindset work is hard work - but it is a simple process that brings about major breakthrough. It’s true what they say, “Change your thoughts and you’ll change your life.”

Today we’re sitting down with Dr. Crystal Collier, a therapist and educator who has been working with adolescents and adults suffering from mental illness, behavioral problems, and substance use disorders since 1991. In her book, The NeuroWhereAbouts Guide, she teaches brain-based parenting including how parents and caregivers can prevent youth from engaging in risky behavior. IT'S MY BIRTHDAY! (And I really love birthdays.) So for today's episode, I decided to share 28 things I've learned in my 28 years of existence. Some are practical, some are laughable. Here's to the best year yet — I know more good things are coming. :)

  • 54. Permission to Be in the Process (ft. Jess Hover)

Today we’re talking to Jess Hover about a big one: IDENTITY. While it’s a very layered and complex topic, it’s an extremely important one and we’re going to unpack some things we’ve learned along the way. In a world with so many voices telling us who we are or who we should be, we get to choose who we listen to and what we believe. And maybe the heart of it is simply giving yourself permission to be in the process because as Jess says, “All of life is figuring out who you are.”

  • 53. A Conversation About Disability & The Church (ft. Renee Dollenmayer)

As a Christian, I can't believe we haven't had more (or any) conversations like this about disability. I've never thought about how unreached the disabled community is, simply because many churches are still unaccessible. But as Renee Dollenmayer says, “Church should be a place where everyone could go.” Today we’re talking to Renee about how her experience with cerebral palsy has led her down a path of deep soul healing.

“Heaven will not be full until the disabled are included.”

  • 52. How to Live an Inspired Life (ft. Belle Grubb)

Often conversations about “living your best life” get misconstrued, especially in the church world where self care can sometimes be seen as selfish. It’s true that most of the ideas surrounding “being your best self” today are self-focused, but Belle Grubb of the Inspired Lady Podcast is flipping the script and teaching us how we can become the best version of ourselves so that we can give our best to God and the people around us! Can’t wait for you to hear this one!

  • 51. Eating Disorders & Body Acceptance (ft. Lauren Smolar)

I struggled with eating disorders for over 6 years. I’ve struggled with body image for even longer than that. With only 4% of women believing they’re beautiful, I think it’s obvious our unrealistic standards for beauty have become a real issue. Today we’re having a conversation with Lauren Smolar from the National Eating Disorders Association about factors in disordered eating and relationship with food, body acceptance, and how to find healing and hope!

If you or someone you love is struggling with an eating disorder, please contact the National Eating Disorders Hotline at 1-800-931-2237.

  • 50. Prostitution, Porn & Policy (ft. Helen Taylor)

Today we’re talking to Helen Taylor from Exodus Cry about what’s going on in the world of trafficking. It’s good news that awareness is spreading, but one piece of the puzzle that has slipped under the radar for too long is pornography. (You might remember all the #traffickinghub news that’s come out in the last few years.) So today we’re talking about what’s going on behind the scenes in the porn industry, prostitution, and policy.

I hope this episode not only wakes us up and calls us to action, but reminds us that God is still on the move and equipping us to play a role in abolishing modern day slavery and standing in the gap for vulnerable men, women, and children all over the world.
