  • A horrific rail disaster in Witham

You may remember that last week, Margaret Mills took us on a trip to Witham to look at the time that the town was involved with the weaving trade, and later after spa water had been found, for a short while the town had become a bit of hit with those wishing to take to the water.

This week Margaret returned to Witham, but on a much sadder occasion when in September 1905, the town became the scene of an horrific rail smash after an express train de-railed at Witham station.

If you missed what Margaret said, you can listen again here:-

  • Witham in olden times

The subject chosen by Margaret Mills this week concerned the town of Witham between the 16th and 18th centuries when it was THE place to be.

It seems that at one time the town was favoured by Flemish weavers as a base for the cloth industry, and a bit later the town was renowned for its health giving spa waters.

  • A New look at Squire Christopher Tower of Brentwood

The subject of Margaret Mills’ historical feature today concerned a man who was the Lord of the Manor of Weald Park and Weald Hall in the early part of the 19th century.

Known as Squire Christopher Tower, it seems that he hit on the idea of spinning goat wool, not as it turns out with a great deal of success.

But he was much better at breeding the animals.
