Bylines, Ledes & Biases

If you didn’t think diversity in journalism was important, I’ve got a fun little story for you. I haven’t done any deep dives on any numbers – this is more of a personal take.

For this episode, I spoke with Dr. Lori Latrice Martin, someone journalists usually cite for stories. We discussed telling the whole story when reporting on topics that involve race and society, even if you're living in a new city.

I spoke with Louis Moore, a history professor based in Grand Rapids, Michigan, about why he researches black newspapers, Reading!, and how he uses Twitter as a historian.

I spoke with Donnell Suggs, sports Editor at the Houston Home Journal in Georgia about working in hyperlocal news, print media, becoming a staple in a new, small community and tips on how to start freelancing.

I spoke with Shauna Stuart, who began working on the Southern Girls Project in June 2016. The project lets "girls tell us what it's like to be a Southern girl in 2016," says the Facebook group's description.

Look for a new batch of Bylines, Ledes & Biases episodes coming soon. I've got conversations coming with Shauna Stuart, Donnell Suggs, Lori Martin and Louis Moore.

Daphnie Glenn is an Upstate SC native and resident who recently self-published Brown Boy, "an illustrated story for children of color that helps start tough conversations surrounding social issues." To pick up your copy visit brownboybook.com or @brownboybook on Instagram.

Here’s a snippet from our conversation, where she discussed why she decided to write and self-publish the book and her plans for the future.

Michelle Black, owner and operator of the Upstate South Carolina-based Social Butterfly Boutique, is using her love for beauty and fashion to benefit her community.

I talked with Steven Gaither of HBCU Gameday about covering HBCU sports – and everything that comes with it – in this digital age. There's the game, but then there's also the band, the fans... and the culture. We also dipped into innovating, possibly growing a network and also history. Who doesn't love history?
