  • Rich Ragsdale, A Composer and Director – FilmTracks Ep. 14
Andrew and Jessie were very pleased to have composer/director Rich Ragsdale. Co-founder of KNR Productions, Rich’s career began as a composer for film (Edmond, Eight Legged Freaks), television (King of Queens, According to Jim, Will and Grace), and video games (Aliens vs. Predator, No One Lives Forever). In 2003, Rich crossed over into the directing realm with his first award-winning short, Into Something Rich and Strange. Following the festival success of his short, Rich was tapped to direct the ultra-low budget yet highly-stylized horror film, The Curse of El Charro. After winning numerous awards for The Curse Of El Charro, including Best Production Design and Best Music & Sound: Fearless Tales Genre Festival, San Francisco, CA (2005); Best Visual Effects: International Festival of Horror/Science Fiction, Phoenix, AZ (2005) and being nominated for Best Feature at both the Fearless Tales and Eerie Horror Film Festivals, the film was acquired and released in 2005 by Paramount and Showtime. Since his feature debut, Rich continues to compose for feature film and direct highly-acclaimed short films and music videos, all of which continue to build him a solid base of accolades and admirers. Lending his sound design, editorial and production skills to KNR’s first feature, Phantom Love, Rich has also solidified his role as a well-rounded producer.

  • Lucas Vidal – Composer for THE RAVEN – FilmTracks Ep. 11
At only 27 years of age, Lucas Vidal quickly moved from the Berklee College of Music to some of the world’s most respected soundstages. He is already composing scores for The Cold Light of Day (Bruce Willis, Segourney Weaver) and The Raven (John Cusack), directed by James McTeigue (V For Vendetta). He was the youngest student ever to compose and record the score for a feature film with an 80-piece orchestra, and we are incredibly lucky to have him on our show today. We will show some of the recording sessions to Cold Light of Day, talk about his scoring techniques, and his recent venture Music & Motion Productions with his co-founder Steve Dzailowski. We will also hear some clips from The Raven and The Cold Light of Day. You don’t want to miss this.

  • Austin Wintory & ‘Journey’ (PS3) – FilmTracks Ep. 9
With advancements in technology, video games have become an immersive experience. Twenty years ago, orchestral scores and high def video in a video game was an outrageous thought, but everyone knew it was coming. Think of 'Myst', or 'Wing Commander' - these games scratched the surface of what was to become normal in every game released today. In today's podcast, Andrew will talk with Austin Wintory, the score composer to the top downloaded game in PS3 history. With a subtle and very thematic score, we will dissect the experience and inspiration for the music, in addition to talking about specific elements of game scoring vs. live action, and how there seems to be a synergy between the two. We will, of course, show clips and take questions - tune in live @ 5PM PST on http://trigg.la/live!

  • The Music of Documentaries – FilmTracks Ep. 7
Documentaries are often though of as short films that literally document a specific time and place in history. The Discovery Channel, National Georgraphic, The History Channel - they all give us a slice of information in a narrative sense. Voiceover narration, a very informative style. In the broad sense, many documentaries follow this suite, however some are observational - where the story unfolds through visuals, and music. No narration, and no throughline - it's an experience you have to make for yourself. In this episode of FilmTracks, Andrew and Jesse will talk about documentaries that are surprising, and interesting. Films that you may not have heard of, but that demonstrate genius in music selection and direction. As always, tune in - 5PM PST, Tuesday.

  • Gary Whitta and The Book of Eli – FilmTracks Ep. 6
In today's episode, Andrew and Jesse have writer Gary Whitta on the show - a professional screenwriter who's recent credits include 'The Book of Eli' and the upcoming Shyamalan film, 'After Earth'. We will talk exclusively about 'The Book of Eli', about his relationship with music, and how it plays an important role in his creative process. We will also show key scenes from Eli scored by Atticus Ross - the composer that Gary met with during the scoring sessions. Does music define characters during writing? How can it change a scene? We will listen to examples of what Gary listened to for inspiration during the writing of Eli, and talk about how important it was to define key moments on the page.

  • Best Movie Scenes – FilmTracks Ep. 5
No matter what time period, genre, or aesthetic, the films that stand out in our memory are the ones that give us an experience we will never forget.  Some of the time, these experiences are dictated by a subconscious emotional response, while others are just the plan exclamation, ".. this is so awesome."  It's no mistake that these unforgettable movie moments are a result of two things: 1) the image we see on-screen, and 2) the film music.  In this episode, Andrew, Jessie, and our FilmTracks expert Catherine will join in a conversation about great movie moments, the music behind them, and why they transcend the passage of time.
