This week Sylvia and Damon start off with some thoughts about the 4th Democratic Debate and Damon even has some predictions on what's going to happen.
Al menos 60 compañías pagaron $0 en impuestos federales por sus ganancias durante el 2018. Entre esas compañías están Amazon, IBM, Chevron, Delta, Netflix…
Según el Instituto de Política Fiscal y Económica, la reforma fiscal que pasó a finales de 2017 ayudó a que las compañías pasaran de pagar $16,400 millones de dólares en impuestos, a pagar $0 o recibir un reembolso fiscal neto de US$4,300 millones de dólares.
Eso significa que para este año hay un hueco en el presupuesto fiscal de US$20,700 millones de dólares sólo en este cambio.
Parte de la reforma fiscal dejó intactas todas las exenciones fiscales con las que las compañías en realidad no estaban pagando una tasa corporativa del 35%, y ahora la nueva tasa es del 21%. Con eso, los ingresos por impuestos a las empresas bajaron un 31%.
Mientras tanto, según el IRS, 1.6 millones de personas en Estados Unidos no recibieron devoluciones cuando hicieron su declaración anual. De hecho, el gobierno hizo US$6,000 millones de dólares menos en devoluciones este año.
Pero eso no significa que la gente haya estado pagando más en impuestos, sino que recibieron un poco más de dinero en sus cheques a lo largo del año pero no se dieron cuenta.
El NY Times reporta que casi el 65% de los trabajadores en Estados Unidos pagaron menos impuestos, pero sólo el 40% cree que es el caso.
