Joshua Silver is a Red Seal Carpenter with 35 + years of experience. He currently resides in PEI where he teaches carpentry at Holland College for the Heritage Retrofit Carpentry program that Josh was asked to develop 15 years ago.  Since the development of the program, 14 years of graduates have passed through the Heritage Retrofit Carpentry doors; approximately 175 students have graduated from the program.

Roberto Chiotti, MTS, OAA (retired), FRAIC, LEED AP, CAHP, is founding principal emeritus of Larkin Architect Limited, an award-winning,Toronto based firm specializing in the conservation of historic churches and the design of sustainable sacred space for parishes and religious communities mostly within the Christian Tradition. 

Roberto obtained an architectural degree from the University of Waterloo in 1978, he also holds a Master’s of Theology from the University of St. Michael’s College (University of Toronto) which he received in 1988.  He is a Building Specialist member of the Canadian Association of Heritage Professionals, founding member of the Canadian Green Building Council’s Greater Toronto Chapter, and a Fellow of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada.

He currently serves on the Board of the Architecture, Culture, and Spirituality Forum whose mission is to provide an international forum for scholarship, education, practice, and advocacy regarding the cultural and spiritual significance of the built environment. He also chairs the Board of the Trent Hills Arts and Heritage Centre whose mandate is to educate and increase the public’s awareness and appreciation of the diversity in the arts, culture and local heritage.

Colin Yu is a Heritage Planner with the City of Toronto. He holds a BSc specialized in Anthropology from the University of Toronto and an M.A. in Heritage and Archaeology from the University of Leicester.

Colin has worked in the heritage industry for over 10 years and currently holds an active research license (R1104) with the Province of Ontario. He proudly serves as the President of the Ontario Association of Heritage Professionals (OAHP). 

As a Heritage Planner with the City of Toronto, Colin has worked in the Development and Review team to approve development proposals and has provided professional recommendations to the Toronto Preservation Board. Colin has previously worked on numerous projects dealing with all aspects of Ontario’s cultural heritage. He has completed over a hundred cultural heritage technical reports for development proposals and include Cultural Heritage Evaluation Reports, Heritage Impact Statements, Environmental Assessments, and Archaeological Assessments. Colin has worked on a wide range of cultural heritage resources including; cultural landscapes, institutions, commercial and residential sites as well as infrastructure such as bridges, dams, and highways.

This episode features Gerry Zegerius, a structural engineer and senior associate at Tacoma Engineers Inc. Throughout his career, Gerry has assessed, analysed and restored many prominent heritage structures, ranging in size from small cottages to prominent National Historic Sites of Canada. Gerry is also an active member of CAHP, he previously held a seat on the Board, served on CAHP’s Conference Committee and was a member of the executive. 

In his personal life, Gerry enjoys time at the ice rink, the baseball diamond, and in the woods. He is a proud husband and a father of three, and he loves to learn about the stories of places, buildings and people that make up the context of his work.

This episode features Dr. Mariana Esponda Cascajares. Following her training as an architect in Mexico she obtained her Ph.D. Since graduating, Mariana has been working on heritage buildings in both the private and public sector over the last 25 years in North America, as well as in Spain. To fully understand historic construction and to create new sustainable designs, Mariana's projects include restoration on modernist historic facades, adaptive reuse of churches, monasteries and industrial buildings, home renovations, conditional assessments, and rehabilitation of existing structures.

She is the chair of the Adaptive Reuse for a Sustainable Future cluster at Carleton University under the SSHRC-funded Quality in Canada’s Built Environment. Mariana’s team is researching adaptive reuse models in the Ottawa area by developing an inventory of case studies, including vacant and underused buildings, such as offices, sacred buildings and industrial buildings.

She is the coordinator of the Conservation and Sustainability Programme in the Azrieli School of Architecture, as well as the Graduate Diploma in Architectural Conservation at Carleton University.

This episode's featured guest is Dr. Marcus Letourneau, who brings over 20 years of experience to his practice, which is particularly focused on heritage legislation, strategic planning, heritage planning and processes. He has been involved in over 300 projects either as the project director, project manager or as the senior heritage planner. He has been qualified as an expert heritage witness for the
Ontario Land Tribunal.

Currently, he runs M. R. Letourneau and Associates Inc., a specialized heritage and strategic planning firm focused on creative solutions for the management
of cultural heritage resources. He has been qualified as an expert heritage witness in Ontario, an adjunct assistant professor at the University of Waterloo, instructor at the University of Victoria and at the Willowbank School of Restoration Arts. He has co-authored the second edition of Heritage Planning (Routledge) with Dr. Hal Kalman (2020).

His passion for heritage is broad - volunteering on many boards, committees and serving on many organizations in his local community of Kingston, Ontario.

In each of his projects, Evan combines a strong knowledge of heritage conservation best practices with a penchant for providing design solutions that are at once creative and practical.

Inc. has reached all areas of BC.  Elana is Past President of the BC Chapter of the Canadian Association of Heritage Professionals board, a Director on the National CAHP board (and member of Advocacy and membership committees), and a Director on the Friends of the Vancouver City Archives board.

She thrives at bringing the heritage community together to work collaboratively to solve project challenges and provide solutions. Carly is on the Board of the Canadian Association of Heritage Professionals, chair of the CAHP Education Committee and an active member of the CAHP Advocacy Committee, focusing on embodied carbon, policy, climate action and circularity.

Carly is the incoming co-chair of the Association for Preservation Technology Technical Committee for Sustainable Preservation and the CAHP representative to the Zero Net Carbon Collaboration for Existing and Historic Buildings. Carly has practiced within the Engineering Community over the last decade, focusing on mentorship and development of women across the industry. More recently, Carly is the CEO and Founder of Green Salvaged Materials - a consulting and materials company that focuses on generating the connection between the heritage and sustainability communities through discussions around adaptive reuse, deconstruction, material salvage and reintegration of used materials into the design ecosystem.
