Dobrogost the Foundling, Mama Zabagushka the Half Witch, and Barbi the Bonekeeper continue their travels through the ancient forest of Öreg Erdő in 1520s Hungary. Accompanying them this time is Percival Fenix, a Hexenbane. Trouble begins after the party hears a dreadful bell ring out through the trees and are compelled to investigate.
