Although stimulus checks during the pandemic have been well-received, Congress doesn't seem to be considering another one. On July 15, roughly 36 million eligible families are scheduled to receive their first advance monthly payment of up to $300 per kid with the 2021 child tax credit, which will bring some immediate financial relief. But June's bipartisan infrastructure deal didn't include any additional aid for individuals or families. 

Some lawmakers had called for more stimulus money during the spring. Now, however, many in Washington argue that it's less of a priority due to signs of a post-lockdown economic rebound -- like new jobless claims dropping to the lowest since last year. At the same time, demands for payments are gaining public support. With over 2.5 million signatures, a Change.org petition states: "The true unemployment rate for low-wage workers is estimated at over 20% and many people face large debts from last year for things like utilities, rent and child care."

Marvel superhero movie Black Widow raked in an estimated $215 million worldwide at the box office in its opening weekend, Disney announced Sunday. The debut represents the largest domestic box office opening since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic and Marvel's third highest domestic opening for an origin story after Black Panther and Captain Marvel.

The latest installment of the Marvel Cinematic Universe made its worldwide debut Friday in movie theaters and on the Disney Plus streaming service, the latter with a $30 Premier Access fee.

But apparently the theater was the place to see the movie for many fans, as the movie earned $80 million at the domestic box office, $78 million in international box office receipts and more than $60 million through Disney Plus Premier Access worldwide.  

Black Widow was released at the wrong time, in multiple ways. The new Marvel prequel was one of the most high-profile films to be displaced by the constantly shifting theatrical release schedule caused by the shuttering of theaters due to the COVID-19 pandemic. But Black Widow — a film set between Captain America: Civil War’s superhero dust-up and Avengers: Infinity War’s cosmos-spanning epic — feels like a movie that should have been released when it’s actually set, instead of as a belated prequel.

It’s not that Black Widow is a bad movie or an unworthy member of the Marvel saga. Its brand of James Bond-esque spy-fi harks back to some of the more grounded MCU films like Captain America: The Winter Soldier, less focused on superpowered smack-downs in favor of more traditional action movie fare.

And if it had been released in 2016 after Civil War, that would have been fine. But Marvel’s films have undergone vast shifts in tone since then. Doctor Strange opened up the connected universe to straight-up magic, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Thor: Ragnarok both offered galaxy-spanning adventures with whole planets at stake, and of course, Infinity War and Endgame see the Avengers — and Natasha Romanov — fight to save quite literally all of existence.

After all that, Black Widow’s stakes feel low, especially for a character that fans have gotten to see in action in far bigger adventures for over a decade. For all the joking about how Thor could handle the Red Room without breaking a sweat, the over-the-top reality that is the regular day-to-day of the modern Marvel shows and movies hangs over Black Widow’s throwback style.

Square is going to make a hardware wallet for bitcoin, the company’s hardware lead, Jesse Dorogusker, announced on Thursday. CEO Jack Dorsey, who is also the CEO of Twitter, had said in June (in a tweetstorm, naturally) that the company was considering making one, and now Square has made the decision to move forward.
