The issue of farm labor shortages is nothing new to producers in California. While the issue might have been spotlighted during the pandemic, the fresh produce industry has struggled to obtain a sufficient amount of farm labor for a long time.

Unlike other crops, fresh produce still requires humans, and lots of them, to harvest delicate fruits and vegetables.

California ag producers pay the most for electricity compared to those in any other state. With production costs already at an all-time high, one renewable energy company says it can offer relief by converting your biomass waste into electricity.

Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack says the USDA is investing $73 million in 21 projects through the first round of the Meat and Poultry Processing Expansion Program. Vilsack says the funds distributed under the program are intended to help increase production capacity across the supply chain.
