Called to be Ambassadors

Listen Later

During the Revolutionary War, John Adams was sent as an ambassador to the Dutch Republic. His goal was to seek diplomatic recognition for America and to secure a loan to finance the war. The task was difficult. For five months the Dutch government refused to even meet with him. But after a nervous breakdown and several reversals, he was finally able to accomplish his mission. Being an ambassador is a challenging job. An ambassador must not be concerned about personal desires or views but must faithfully represent the person or country that sent them. Being chosen as an ambassador is a significant mark of trust and integrity. In today’s reading, Paul gives us that important title: “We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us” (v. 20). Jesus chose us as His representative to others. We are His ambassadors! As Jesus’ ambassadors, our mission is clear. Paul calls it the “ministry of reconciliation” (v. 18). “Reconciliation” is a lofty word, but the basic idea is quite simple. It refers to mending a broken relationship. To be reconciled with someone is to go from being their enemy to being considered their friend. Scripture teaches that because of sin, every person has a broken relationship with God. However, God has made a way through Christ for all people to be reconciled to Him. As Paul explains, “God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God” (v. 21). Our task then is to appeal to the world on Christ’s behalf to “be reconciled to God” (v. 20). We seek to persuade others, not out of a sense of pride or ambition for our own sake. Rather, we faithfully proclaim the message that has been entrusted to us. >> As Christ’s ambassadors, our primary motive is the love He has shown us—“for Christ’s love compels us” (v. 14). Reflect on some ways you can faithfully serve as Christ’s ambassador today.
