    This is what the LORD says: Stand at the crossroads and look;
ask for the ancient paths, ask where the good way is, and walk in it… Jer 6:16a
    The Way of Submission
Throughout human history, there is a common theme between God and mankind.
God reveals Himself and His way.
What is man’s consistent reaction generation after generation? “I’ll do what I want.”
Jeremiah 18:1-4 – ¬The pot was marred – we are all marred by sin.
He formed it into another pot. His desire is to transform us into His masterpiece.
Ephesians 2:10 “For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”
As seemed best to Him – The potter determines the shape of the pot. He knows its purpose.
You will wrestle with God over this for the rest of your life.
In time, walking with the Lord, you learn, He really can be trusted. He really does intend good for me.
After God had carried out his punishment on the Israelites, he spoke to them through Jeremiah:
Jeremiah 29:11 “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”
Jeremiah 18:5-10 – God retains the right to limit his sovereignty based on man’s response to his offer of forgiveness and restoration and threats of judgment and destruction.
Jeremiah 18:11-12 – “It’s no use!” Despite God’s offers of restoration and threats of judgment, Israel (and by extension, we) stubbornly do what we want.
Jeremiah 18:13-15 – “My people have forgotten me.”
Jeremiah 2:11-13 “…my people have exchanged their Glory for worthless idols.
“They have forsaken me, the spring of living water, and have dug their own cisterns, broken cisterns that cannot hold water.”
Romans 1 Creation was given so man could see God’s power and divine nature and respond by giving God glory and thanks. Instead, we worshipped the creation.
Paul uses the same language as Jeremiah, “They exchanged the glory of the immortal God for idols.”
John 1:10-11 “10 He [Jesus] was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. 11 He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him.”
    Why are we so obstinate?
Galatians 5:17 “For the sinful nature desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the sinful nature. They are in conflict with each other, so that you do not do what you want.”
    The Way of Stubborn Refusal
    • Disregard for God’s will
    • Defense of my sin
    • Deepening of my sin
    • Dependence on my self
    The Way of Submission
    • Revelation of God’s will - through Bible study, the Holy Spirit, other believers
    • Realization of my sinful nature – through application of the Scriptures, conviction of the Spirit
    • Repentance of my sin – a willful turning away from sin and turning toward God’s will
    • Reliance on God’s power to change me – dependence on and faith in God’s ability to overcome my sin
God’s will is that we be changed, transformed, restored really, into something greater.
He is transforming us into his likeness, which was marred by sin.
2 Corinthians 3:18 “And we, who with unveiled faces all reflect [or contemplate] the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his likeness with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.
What’s God’s will for your life? Transformation to be like Jesus Christ. It starts with submission.

    This is what the LORD says: Stand at the crossroads and look;
ask for the ancient paths, ask where the good way is, and walk in it… Jer 6:16a
The Bible is God’s instruction manual for how we’re supposed to do life, marriage, finances, sexuality, relationships, business, every facet of life. (2 Timothy 3:16-17)
16All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 17so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.
Life is as good as it will get when we are surrendered and submitted to the authority of the Bible. (Psalm 19:7-10)
7 The law of the LORD is perfect, reviving the soul.
The statutes of the LORD are trustworthy, making wise the simple.
8 The precepts of the LORD are right, giving joy to the heart.
The commands of the LORD are radiant, giving light to the eyes.
9 The fear of the LORD is pure, enduring forever.
The ordinances of the LORD are sure and altogether righteous.
    10 They are more precious than gold, than much pure gold;
they are sweeter than honey, than honey from the comb.
How to study the Bible – Tools, not rules
(from Matt Chandler’s 6/26/10 Saturday Seminar)
    What to Bring
    1. Consistent time and place – You must solve the time problem.
    2. Bible translation – Find one you like to read.*
    • Paraphrases: The Message, Living Bible, Amplified
    • Dynamic equivalence: New International Version (NIV), New International Readers Version (NIRV)
    • Word-for-word: King James (KJV), New King James (NKJV), New American Standard Bible (NASB), English Standard Version (ESV).
*There is no excuse for not reading something.
    3. Reading Plan – this will give you some direction to gain understanding of the whole revelation of God. It will make you read what you ordinarily would not.
    4. Pen and highlighter – to mark verses that jump off the page.
    5. Journal – to put down your thoughts, prayers, confusion, revelation, etc. Journaling will help you meditate and remember what your read.
    6. Day Planner – This is not spiritual, but intellectual. There will be distractions (including resistance from your sinful nature). Use the planner to write down tasks that come to mind so you can deal with them later and focus.
    What to Do
    1. Start with prayer – You need more than knowledge. You need God – to hear from Him, to have your heart and mind transformed by His word.
    2. Read the Bible – Start small (5 minutes) and let it grow to 20 or 30 minutes or an hour. Do not read to check the box. Do not read like it’s a race. It is an opportunity to hear from your Creator and Savior.
    3. Underline or highlight verses that jump out at you.
    4. Journal – Write out the verses that jump out at you and observations. Write down other verses that relate.
    5. Application – How would this apply to you? Write it down. Deal with your heart.
You will not be able to do it like someone who’s done it for years. Start small and let it grow. The value is an accumulation of time spent with the Lord. Over time it will change your thinking and transform your heart and mind.
    Jeremiah 6:16
    This is what the LORD says: “Stand at the crossroads and look;
ask for the ancient paths, ask where the good way is, and walk in it,
and you will find rest for your souls. But you said, ‘We will not walk in it.’
You have to get to the root of why you are resistant to read the Bible. Not walking in the path that God has shown you exposes a problem in your heart.
Your actions / inactions are from your heart. You have to deal with your heart or you will try this and fail.

    Biblical Qualifications for Elders

    disobedience or grounds of accusation.

Uncontentious Elders must not be given to quarrelling or selfish argumentation.
Free from the love of money Elders must not be stingy, greedy or out for sordid gain. They should not be preoccupied with amassing material things, but rather should be a model of giving.

Today we celebrate Jesus triumphing over death and over our sin.
When it looked like death had overcome Jesus, he raised from the dead – by his own power.
When it looked like our sin had overcome him, his resurrection proved his power over our sin.
When it his people had rejected him, he turned it into our acceptance by the Father
When the Pharisees hated, he overcame it by his love.
When he looked completely humiliated, we saw his glory more completely.
    His suffering brought our healing.
His followers’ sorrow turned to joy.
Enjoy your time together with family and friends. Build memories together. Celebrate together.
Even in times of sorrow, God brings joy.
    Story – Hunting Easter balls.
The Bible says that there was joy in the cross for Jesus.
    Hebrews 12:2
2 Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
How could there be joy in the cross?
He was mocked, sneered at, beaten, his body was mutilated, and ultimately his hands and feet were nailed to a cross, where he hung for six hours until he died.
Jesus endured the cross for the joy that was set before him.
    What was set before him?
First, in completing his work on the cross, Jesus fulfilled the will of his Father.
Second, when Jesus finished his work on the cross, he returned to his Father in glory.
Third, his work on the cross brought many sons to glory.
    Hebrews 2:10
10 In bringing many sons to glory, it was fitting that God, for whom and through whom everything exists, should make the author of their salvation perfect through suffering.
He was purchasing many sons to glory, giving up his life, that you could live and be free from the guilt and shame and the curse of sin.
He endured the cross with joy because he loved you.
He knew you’d be messy – that your heart and thoughts are wicked.
That’s the whole point of the cross. That’s the whole point of the Gospel.
You are broken and sinful and he loved you anyway and
demonstrated his love for us in this: while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. (Ro 5:8)
He loves you today. He is not in love with some future version of you.
Understanding God’s love for you is the most important truth you must learn.
Karl Barth, was a famous 19th century Swiss theologian, thinker, prolific writer, and professor at several leading European universities. He shaped the way we study of theology to this day. He was asked by a reporter for a brief summary of his extensive writings – his life’s work in theology and biblical understanding. He thought a moment and replied, "Jesus loves me this I know, for the Bible tells me so."
The sorrow of the cross gave way to joy in the resurrection of Christ.
Do you know the joy of Easter?
You know the story of the cross and resurrection, but has it ever brought you joy?
    Psalm 32:1-5
Have you known the joy of having your guilt removed from you? Of being free from guilt?
That is the whole point of the Gospel: Jesus, the perfect one, gave his life for you, the guilty one.
And he did it with joy because he loves you.

    Luke 2:1-20
vv. 1-3 – Clay pointed out, “How would God have Jesus born in Bethlehem as prophesied in Micah 5:2 when his parents lived in Nazareth? He would use a pagan government.”
vv. 4 – Jesus would be David’s descendant, the king who would always be on His throne.
vv. 5-13 – Born in a manger. Angel told shepherds, not political nor religious rulers – humility.
    v. 14 – “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests.”
Favor – (eudokia) “good will, kind intent, delight, pleasure”
Easter is a celebration of God demonstrating his love for us.
The Lord shows Moses his glory.
    Exodus 33:18-20
18 Then Moses said, “Now show me your glory.” 19 And the LORD said, “I will cause all my goodness to pass in front of you, and I will proclaim my name, the LORD, in your presence. I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion. 20 But,” he said, “you cannot see my face, for no one may see me and live.”
    Exodus 34:5-7
5 Then the LORD came down in the cloud and stood there with him and proclaimed his name, the LORD. 6 And he passed in front of Moses, proclaiming, “The LORD, the LORD, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness, 7 maintaining love to thousands, and forgiving wickedness, rebellion and sin. Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished; he punishes the children and their children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation.”
When God showed Moses his glory, He pronounced his compassion, grace, abundance of love and faithfulness to men.
He also spoke about His justice, punishing sin – and how did he do that?
He punished sin by laying our punishment on His Son.
To hold up your goodness as evidence of your worthiness is to make little of the glory of God’s grace.
    Isaiah 64:6
All of us have become like one who is unclean, [All. Unclean like someone with a terrible
disease who are not allowed to participate in
    religious ceremony.]
and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags; [Righteous acts are filthy rags, what about
    your unrighteous acts.]
we all shrivel up like a leaf, [the effects of sin]
and like the wind our sins sweep us away.
All the while, God knew that you were a mess.
He knew that all you had to offer was a train wreck.
He knew that your heart and thoughts were wicked.
That was the whole point of the cross of Christ.
To hold up your goodness as evidence of your worthiness is to make little of the glory of God’s grace.
    Romans 5:8
But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
The cross is the great picture of his love for you.
It is the greatest demonstration of love in the world.
The thought that we have nothing to hold up as our own goodness, worthiness or value is against our human nature, but you are supposed to rest in his favor, love, grace, mercy for you.
This should create two things in you: repentance and gratitude.
You should desire to repent of the things in your life that don’t honor this great love.
Your life should show thankfulness for all He’s done.

Being “in Christ” forever changes your identity, your direction, and your destiny.
Your identity has a lot to do with what you’re about. What you’re focus is. Where you spend your time and energy. Where your passion is.
The scriptures and the Holy Spirit are always reading our intentions – what we’re about. The scriptures are really clear – all of us, all our existence, all the creation – it’s all for Him.
    It’s not about us.
If you are “in Christ,” then you are coming to understand that you are intended to be for the glory of God. You are people for His glory.
Short story – all of mankind sinned and was alienated from God.
We all refused God’s authority over us.
When you refuse authority to a government over you, it is treason.
We were all guilty of treason – which in all cultures in all times brings the death penalty.
We had all tread on God’s authority.
But even before that, God had planned to rescue men and women from their sins
by sending his son to absorb the punishment for their sins.
It didn’t end there, he also intended to show them such love, and to put His Spirit in them to give them power so that they became what he intended all along –
people of love, holiness, kindness – to be like their creator.
    Ephesians 1:1-14
The theme of the passage is saturated with the majesty and grace of God toward his people.
    v. 3 - Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.
vv. 3-14 can be broken into three sections, each ending with a call to praise God.
    v. 6 – to the praise of his glorious grace
    v. 12 – for the praise of his glory
    v. 14 – to the praise of his glory
Because of Who God is and what He has done for us, He is worthy of our praise.
    v. 3 - He blessed us with every spiritual blessing in Christ.
The passage is so rich in describing what God has done, it is almost overwhelming.
John Calvin said the passage is intended to rouse believers’ hearts to thankfulness, “to set them all on flame.”
The idea is that all of these blessings are because or our position “in Christ” – the term is used 12 times in these first 14 verses.
    v. 4 - He chose us to be holy and blameless.
Before the creation – He chose us to be holy and blameless.
He intended to bring holiness to us before we were looking for it.
Want to know God’s will for you? It has always been for you to be holy and blameless.
He desires for you to be holy – like he is.
He sent his Son so that to deal with your sin, and your alienation from God.
We are to walk in what He has done for us.
    v. 5 - He predestined us to be adopted as his sons.
Somehow in God’s plan, in His magnificent love, He decided to bring people who were enemies of his into His family.
Being God’s sons means because of our new birth, we have a new relationship with God.
We were enemies, now, God is our Father.
We have the privileges of being God’s sons – he hears, provides, listens, cares, and has an inheritance for us with Jesus Christ.
    v. 7 - In him we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.
“Redemption” refers to freedom that is attained for a slave or prisoner of war by payment of a ransom. The price for our freedom was the blood of Christ.
Jesus Christ is the hero of the scriptures –the hero of all time.
He gave his perfect life for the life of sinners.
He traded his righteousness for our punishment.
For everyone who is “in him,” he has changed their identity, direction and destiny forever.
    It’s all about him.
We are people for His glory.

Who we are in Christ is our identity, our direction, and our destiny.
    2 Corinthians 5:17-21
“In Christ,” is our union or relationship with him through faith.
In Christ, I have a new identity. I am a new creation.
Before Christ I was sinful, far from God, hopelessly lost in my own sin and selfishness.
    Romans 3:10-12
    10 As it is written:
    “There is no one righteous, not even one;
11 there is no one who understands, no one who seeks God.
    12 All have turned away, they have together become worthless;
there is no one who does good, not even one.”
We were all the fool in proverbs – morally deficient. Like people wondering around in the dark.
If you are in Christ (in relationship with him) through faith, then your identity has changed.
    1. In Christ, you are a new creation
    - It is hard to over-state the change Paul is taking about.
    - it is not just that we’ve had our sins wiped out like a white board’s been wiped clean.
    - Christ’s work has made us new creatures.
“New” (kainos) (kī-no's) – in respect to form: recently made, fresh, recent
    - in respect to substance: new kind
Usage: “Neither do men pour new wine into old wineskins.”
“This cup is the new covenant in my blood”
“Creature” – (ktisis) (ktē'-sēs) is creation or created thing.
Usage: -But at the beginning of creation God 'made them male and female.
-Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation
The old has gone – who you were – lost in sin, slave to sin, turning away from God – all gone.
All that you were is gone – all your sin, all your shame, all your guilt is taken away in Christ, because He died for your sin. He took all the punishment for it and there is no more.
You are free from your past. (from It is Well With My Soul)
My sin, O the bliss of this glorious tho't,
My sin, not in part, but the whole
Is nailed to the cross and I bear it no more.
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, O my soul!
When the enemy reminds you who you have been, you remember who you are in Christ – you are a new creations.
The new has come – in Christ, who you are has changed.
You are according to 1 Peter 2,
    • A royal priesthood,
    • a chosen people,
    • a holy nation
    • a people belonging to God
    • I Cor 5:17 you are a new creation
    v. 18-20 – This is from God – “Salvation is from the Lord” (Jonah)
    God reconciled us to himself.
    2. In Christ , you are reconciled to God.
“Reconcile” – to change or exchange (as in changing money).
He exchanged our former lives of sin with a new life that is “in Christ.”
We’ve gone from being lost and hopeless to being alive in Christ.
Not only that, but after he reconciled us, He gave us the ministry of reconciliation.
    3. In Christ, you are his ambassador.
We who have received the privilege of being reconciled now have the responsibility of being instruments in God’s hands to minister the message of reconciliation throughout the world.
Just like we talked last week, we are a royal priesthood -
    v. 21 – Summary of the Gospel:
Christ is the only one who is entirely righteous.
At Calvary he took our sin upon himself and the punishment we deserved, which was death.
By marvelous exchange, he gave us his righteousness and to be reconciled to God.
Our acceptance and our standing with God are completely based in Christ. It is all his doing.
    4. In Christ, you have become the righteousness of God.
In this marvelous exchange, Christ took our sin, we get his righteousness.

Who are you as a Christian?
    Who are you in Christ?
The world (and we, sometimes) limit who we are to how we behave.
But who we are in Christ is so much more than what we do.
Who we are in Christ is our identity, our direction, and our destiny.
1 Peter 2:4-12 – In Christ, Christians are:
A Royal Priesthood – This was said of the Israelites in Exodus 19:6.
You will be for me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.’ These are the words you are to speak to the Israelites.”
Now it is true of Christians.
    • Reflect the holiness of God (1 Peter 1:15)
    • Offer spiritual sacrifices
o Sacrifices of our bodies (living in holiness) (Romans 12:1)
o Sacrifices of money or material goods (Philippians 4:18)
o Sacrifices of praise to God (Hebrews 13:15)
o Sacrifices of doing good (Hebrews 13:16)
    • Intercede for people before God (James 5:16)
    • Represent God before people (2 Corinthians 5:20)
A chosen people – This was said of the Israelites throughout the OT. Deut 10:15
15 Yet the LORD set his affection on your forefathers and loved them, and he chose you, their descendants, above all the nations, as it is today.
Now it is true of Christians. Ephesians 1:4-5
4 For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love 5 he predestined us to be adopted as his sons through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will
A holy nation – This was said of the Israelites in Exodus 19:6 (above)
    Romans 9:25-26
25 As he says in Hosea:
    “I will call them ‘my people’ who are not my people;
and I will call her ‘my loved one’ who is not my loved one,”
Paul quoting Hosea – in the original context these passages refer to the spiritual restoration of Israel. But Paul applies this to Gentile believers, that God is a saving, forgiving, restoring God who delights to take those who are “not my people” and make them “my people.”
A people belonging to God – we were not the people of God. That title belonged to the Israelites. But now we are the recipients of God’s mercy.
The phrase is literally we are God’s “possession.” The word refers to something owned, especially something that has been purchased by the owner.
    1 Corinthians 6:20
You were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies
Now declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.
