What does the cross tell me about how God feels about me when I am at my worst? Romans 5 reminds us that God’s love wasn’t attracted to us at our best. It moved toward us at our worst. Paul doesn’t simply tell us that God loves us, he tells us when God loved us. Not when we were strong. Not when we had cleaned ourselves up. Not when we were looking for him. “While we were still weak…”, “While we were still sinners…”, and “While we were enemies…”.

Most of us know what it feels like to lose our peace when life gets difficult. When we face uncertainty, disappointment, and suffering, we wonder, “Where is God in this?” Paul reminds us that the gospel doesn’t promise a life without trouble, it gives us a new way to walk through trouble. Because we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God, we stand in His grace, and we have a hope that suffering cannot destroy.

There are moments when faith is easy in our lives. When things are going well, when relationships are healthy, or when prayers get answered exactly the way we wanted. However, it is much harder to believe God when everything you can see seems to contradict what God has said. In Romans 4 Paul continues to highlight Abraham to show us what faith looks like. God made Abraham a promise. Timed passed, and passed, and passed. Abraham and Sarah grew older. Their circumstances became less favorable. Eventually, from a human perspective, God’s promise looked impossible. Yet Abraham believed. This passage is important to us now because most of us don’t struggle to believe God when life makes sense. We struggle to believe God when our life doesn’t make sense. God is able to keep His promises, even when circumstances seem impossible.

What makes me acceptable to God? The religious person wants to know: What makes someone part of God’s people? Is it heritage? Circumcision? Keeping the Law? Religious performance? Paul goes back to Abraham and says something radically important: God declared Abraham righteous before Abraham received the religious sign of circumcision and centuries before the Law was given. In other words, the blessing of God doesn’t come because we have the right religious credentials. It comes because we trust the God who gives grace. Like we read in Romans chapter 3, faith receives what works can never earn.

Romans 1 down through Romans 3:20 reports the bad news: None is righteous, no, not one (3:11). But then, in 3:21 - 3:31 Paul shares the good news: We Are Saved! By Grace Alone! Through Faith Alone! In Christ Alone! Paul builds his case in Romans 1 - 3 using logic and skillful argumentation. In Romans 4:1-8 Paul looks to the Patriarchs, Abraham and David, to illustrate and confirm the glorious doctrine of justification by faith. The passage concludes describing the staggering blessing we believers in Jesus enjoy - - - our lawless deeds are forgiven... our sins are covered... the Lord does not count our sin against us... we are counted righteous apart from works. In short, and as it says later in Romans 5:1, we have peace with God. And even more than this, we become children of God. Imagine. Really - - - try to get your mind around this. Peace with The Almighty. Daughters and Sons of the King. We Who Believe Are Breathtakingly Blessed.

Salvation by grace eliminates all spiritual pride and self-righteousness. God freely justifies all people by grace through faith, replacing our urge to brag with resting entirely in Christ’s completed work.

Have you ever felt like no matter how hard you tried, you could never quite measure up? Most of us know that feeling, not just in life, but spiritually. Deep down, we wonder if we’ve done enough, been good enough, or could ever be enough for God. After spending three chapters exposing humanity’s guilt, Paul now turns the corner with two of the most hope-filled words in Scripture: “But now…” God has done for us what we could never do for ourselves. The gospel is not about lowering God’s standard; it’s about God meeting His own standard on our behalf through Jesus Christ.

Have you ever had someone break a promise to you? Perhaps it was a business partner. A close friend. A spouse. A parent. Most of us have learned through painful experience that human promises can disappoint. We begin to wonder, “Can I really trust anyone?” That question lies underneath Romans 3. Paul has just dismantled every source of human confidence. The pagan is guilty. The moral person is guilty. Even the religious person is guilty. At this point, someone might ask, “If God’s own covenant people failed so miserably, has God’s plan failed too?” Paul answers with one of the strongest statements in Scripture: “By no means!” The failure of God’s people never means the failure of God’s promises. Our unfaithfulness magnifies, not minimizes, the unwavering faithfulness of God.

Paul’s entire argument culminates in addressing circumcision - the outward reflection of being keepers of the law, or being God’s covenant people. This argument would've ruffled some feathers, but Paul shifts the focus of the Jewish people to an INWARD matter. Now circumcision becomes an inward reality, not of some outward sign. Paul's argument shows that it's easier to be an outward Christian because that doesn't require heart change.
