Paul would tell them of Jesus’ death, resurrection, and the ministry of the Holy Spirit. He would tell them that working for God without the power of the Holy Spirit is futile. He would tell them that power—everyday power—is available from God for everyone… It is essential for all believers every day to be plugged in to our power source—God. We need to stay close. Jesus is our connection and the Holy Spirit is the conduit.
When we think about God’s will, we think of the future. To really know God’s will (this is why it takes spiritual wisdom and understanding), we have to learn it one day at a time. His will for me today is what matters—it is the only thing that matters. And when I am in His will today, tomorrow I will find myself in the same place!
This demonstrates to us how critical it is for each of us to be honest with the issue of our sin. There can be no ‘If I sinned’ prayers. We can’t rationalize that what we are doing isn’t really that bad or that God somehow understands why we are sinning. Sin needs a precise diagnosis and the Bible is the tool to conduct that examination. Examine our hearts daily, Paul said, and the Holy Spirit will make your diagnosis. There is no value—only harm—in putting off dealing with the diagnosis…
God has a specific will—with specific timing—for all of us. The thing we have to learn is to be patient in finding it. God wasn’t saying ‘no’ when Paul wanted to go to Ephesus the 1st time; he was saying ‘wait…’
