Jealousy and division among God’s people can be devastating. This contention is not only harmful to the believers involved, but also to the community around them that sees the fighting and division. We should always try to avoid these divisions at all costs. And that is exactly what we will see today with the Gileadites and the Ephraimites. Although Jephthah was doing what God had called him and anointed him to do, the Ephraimites were jealous and wanted control. Hence they rose up to caused trouble.

Vows are serious things and not to be taken lightly. As we learn today from Jephthah’s hasty emotional vow, many of us make vows we really don’t mean. When we make hasty emotional vows that are not well thought out we either find ourselves bound by something we want out of, or guilty of breaking a vow we have made and thus making our word worthless. And this is especially troublesome when that vow was made to God.

God's Word never returns void in our life. God always keeps His promises. But with His blessings we often find conflict is not far behind. We have an enemy who when he can't stop God's work from unfolding in our life, will turn his effort to steal our joy that comes from the blessing. This is the pattern we see in the life of Abraham and Sarah as they seek to walk out the life of faith.
