From here he will not only address the judgment of the Lord on their persecutors and all who reject Jesus but also the Coming of Christ and what will happen just before I that in the Great Tribulation.

In the incredible reconciliation, between Jacob and Esau, we have a picture of the even greater reconciliation, the eternal reconciliation, that has taken place between God and man.

In today’s passage we will see Paul help the Thessalonians regain an “eternal” perspective which is key to enduring earthly trials with hope and joy. And in so doing, it will bring them great encouragement in their trials. Simply understanding that one day your enemies will face God and be dealt with for their mistreatment of you is often all it takes to find strength and encouragement in times of persecution. And this will be Paul’s encouragement for them and us today.

As Jacob finds himself wrestling with God, we are reminded that a life that God can bless, a life that God can fill, is a life that is emptied and surrendered before Him.
