First, the virtues expounded were generally contrary to the Greco-Roman pagan world. Second, the reason these virtues are prevalent in our culture is because of our nations Christian heritage that has thus elevated these character traits or Christian ideals as virtues. Third, to the extent the culture has misappropriated these virtues they have lost their uniquely Christian identity.
