  • The Hard Heart of Man - Jonah 4:1-3
Based on Jonah 4:1–3, this sermon examines Jonah's anger at God's mercy toward Nineveh and exposes the danger of knowing sound theology without having a heart transformed by it. Jonah knew that God was gracious, compassionate, slow to anger, and abundant in lovingkindness, yet he treated God's mercy toward his enemies as an evil. The sermon challenges the church to examine the ways we can condemn the sins of the world while refusing to love the people trapped in them. We may know Scripture, defend sound doctrine, and speak confidently about justice and mercy, yet still resist God when His grace reaches someone we believe does not deserve it. True love does not ignore sin or compromise God's justice. It tells the truth about sin, warns of judgment, and points sinners to the mercy available through Jesus Christ. At the heart of the message is a sobering truth: without a changed heart, Christianity is dead. Knowledge alone cannot produce genuine love for our neighbors. We need God to transform our hearts so that we no longer call His mercy evil, distort His justice to suit our preferences, or remain silent because we fear people more than we fear Him. The sermon calls us to repent of our own hardness, trust the God who changes hearts, and love our neighbors enough to proclaim both the seriousness of sin and the hope of the Gospel. The greater than Jonah has come: Jesus Christ bore judgment so that guilty sinners might turn and live.
