The winners of the 2017 Sutherland Shire Council Australia Day Awards were announced this week.

A forgetful tradie copped a fine for shoplifting a $3 battery after becoming distracted when he asked the check-out girl on a date.

Earlier this year you may remember Cam spoke with Federal Treasurer Scott Morrison about the passing of his friend and patriarch of the Sutherland Shire Michael Tynan.

Mr Tynan passed away in February at the age of 80, having spent many of those years serving the Shire in a number of roles.

This Friday Night the Tynan family have organised a charity ball in commemoration of his life and achievements, with proceeds going to the St George and Sutherland Medical Research Foundation.

The dinner will also be celebrating 50 years of Tynan Motors, the company Michael pioneered.

The NSW government has announced a subsidy to help low-income households upgrade from an old fridge or TV to a new energy-efficient appliance.

$4 million has been allocated to the program as part of the Home Energy Action program for the remainder of the financial year. 

Environment Minister and Member for the Sutherland Shire seat of Cronulla Mark Speakman believes the program will go some way to helping low-income households, including pensioners, cut hundreds off their energy bill.
