The 2026-27 season marks Campbell's 50th as a member of NCAA Division I… and when March rolls around every year, college basketball fans in Buies Creek remember fondly the first time the Camels went dancing.

In front of 15,800 fans at the sold-out Greensboro Coliseum, Mark Mocnik led all scorers – including seven future NBA draft picks – with 29 points as Campbell squared off against number-one Duke in the first round of the 1992 NCAA tournament.

Not only did "Money" finish with more points than household names like Christian Laettner and Grant Hill, but he also led all rebounders with 10 in front of a national TV audience.

Mark Mocnik arrived at Campbell as a freshman in the summer of 1988 and over the next five years played some of his best basketball when the stakes were highest.

As a freshman, he was an all-tournament selection as the Camels advanced to the Big South final. During his red-shirt junior season, he led the Camels to the league title and was named tournament MVP.

Mark never played pro ball, but he was at his best when the stakes were highest. Now, almost 35 years after Mark lit up the Blue Devils, he shares his story.

Four decades ago, Buies Creek was a hotbed for developing some of the nation's best multi-sport track athletes.

Leanne Plum arrived in Buies Creek in the summer of 1982 after earning 12 all-state honors and two Florida prep track and field state championships.

By the time she graduated four years later, Leanne had earned All-America honors three times. Her school records in the heptathlon and javelin still stand 40 years later.

But Leanne didn't just compete on the track, she also played varsity tennis and ran cross country and was involved in a number of activities during her time in the Creek.

She went on to become one of the nation's best cyclists, taught high school literature and ran a business that ran guided fly fishing and hunting activities.

It's no surprise that in 2004, Leanne was inducted into the Campbell Athletics Hall of Fame.

t's been almost 35 years since the lights shown brightest on the Campbell Basketball team when the Fighting Camels squared off against defending national champ and top-ranked Duke in the NCAA tournament opening round at the Greensboro Coliseum.

 

And make no mistake about it, the young man who led Campbell to its first Division I conference title and trip to the "Big Dance" was definitely Joe Spinks of Asheboro, North Carolina.

 

A four-time all-conference performer, Joe was named Big South rookie of the year in 1991 and the league's player of the year in 1994.  While his name still dots the Camel record books in nearly every statistical category, Spinks would tell you that his greatest accomplishments came within the team aspect, not individual recognition.

 

Joe not only led Campbell to a convincing win over Charleston Southern as a sophomore in the 1992 Big South final – and as a result – a defensive assignment against national player of the year Christian Laettner, but two seasons later, led the Camels to the program's first wins ever over opponents from the ACC and SEC.

 

Joe went on to play professionally in Europe for a dozen years before entering the coaching ranks.  He was inducted into the Big South Conference Hall of Fame in 2004 and the Campbell Hall of Fame in 2010.

 

In 2011, Joe was named head coach at Eastern Guilford High School – a position he still holds.

Less than two percent of high school athletes realize their dream of competing at an NCAA Division I program. Evan Darm lived that dream at Campbell University. Now, a decade after graduating, he is not only pursuing a coaching career at the highest level of collegiate athletics but is doing it at his alma mater.

Evan Darm came to Campbell in the fall of 2011 after earning all-state honors in his native Illinois. During his time on the trails and track, he played a big role in the Fighting Camel distance program becoming one of the best in the Big South Conference.

Evan was an all-conference performer in cross country, indoor and outdoor track, but he may be remembered more for the determination and grit he displayed in his final collegiate race.

After graduation, Evan began a coaching career that eventually led him back to Buies Creek, where he serves as head coach of Campbell's men's and women's cross country and track and field teams.

Four decades ago, Buies Creek – home of Campbell University – was said to be located in the "middle of nowhere." But that didn't mean you couldn't get where you wanted to go from central Harnett County where the North Carolina piedmont meets the Coastal Plain.

Campbell has produced United States congressmen, Major League Baseball players, PGA Tour members, thousands of lawyers, plus doctors, teachers and more graduates who live all over the globe.

How about a model who has walked the runways in Milan and New York City, an actor who works the sound stages in Los Angeles… and a tennis instructor, all rolled up in one?

Frankie DelConte once guarded Michael Jordan in high school before starring on the Campbell tennis team in the early days of the program's Division one era.

Now, his acting and modeling career keeps him busy on the West Coast, but he still makes time to play – and help others learn – the sport he loves.

Juha Miettinen arrived at Campbell in the fall of 1987 from Finland by way of Winston-Salem, N.C. Four years later, he not only graduated, but left a legacy that included All-America honors, a Big South player of the year award, and victories over the likes of North Carolina, Duke and Penn State.

He went on to serve as an assistant coach at his alma mater – helping the team win two Big South titles – and to play professional indoor soccer.

Along the way, Juha and his wife Whitney – who met at CU – raised a family and settled in her hometown of Knoxville, Tennessee.

He is a member of the Campbell Athletics and Big South Conference Halls of Fame.

Jay Overton arrived at Campbell in the fall of 1971 and made a golf powerhouse even better.

 

A transfer from Duke, Jay helped lead the Camels to back-to-back top-five finishes in the NAIA national tournament, including a runner-up showing in 1973 when he was the individual co-champion.

 

Under the direction of coach Hargrove Davis, Jay and his teammates were part of a golf dynasty in Buies Creek – even before Keith Hills golf club was built in 1974 – and the athletic teams transitioned to the Division I ranks. 

 

Those Campbell teams finished in the top five of the NAIA national championship seven times in a nine-year span from 1969 through 1977.

 

Following graduation, Jay began a career as golf professional in 1973 at Pinehurst Country Club and became head pro two years later.  He served more than three decades at Innisbrook Resort in Florida and is now Director of Golf at Puntacana Resort in the Dominican Republic.

 

Along the way, he competed on the PGA Tour and PGA Tour Legends – and has played in a total of 24 majors - including a pair of US Open Championships.

 

Jay was inducted into the Campbell Athletics Hall of Fame in 1988, and his travels recently brought him back to the Cape Fear Region for his grandson's high school graduation.

Yvonne Cox arrived at Campbell in the fall of 1996 fresh off a West Virginia State amateur title and joined a golf program that would become one of the nation's best over the next four years.

A relative late-starter in the game, Vonnie's all-around athleticism and competitive drive propelled her to a pair of top-10 finishes in the ASUN Championship and two NCAA regional appearances.

After graduating in 2000, Vonnie qualified for the U.S. Women's Amateur Championship then embarked on a professional career. Over five seasons, she made 64 starts on the LPGA Developmental circuit – now known as the Epson Tour – and qualified for the 2004 U.S. Open.

She entered the business field and took an extended break from the game but regained her passion for the sport. She has already won a pair of tournaments while producing a top-10 finish at the 2023 LPGA Senior Championship.

Through the years, she has stayed in contact with her fellow Campbell Golf alumni and has returned to participate in the annual Battle for the Creek tournament in early November.

Now based in Williamsburg, Virginia, Vonnie is a teaching pro in addition to competing on the Legends of the LPGA Tour.
