When you think of the all-time greats in Campbell Basketball history, the name Sam Staggers is definitely at the top of the list.

The Campbell Hall-of-Famer led the Camels to 71 victories over his final three seasons, a runner-up finish in the 1977 NAIA national tournament, and was named first-team All-American.

But Sam’s basketball journey was just beginning. He chose Europe over an opportunity with the Harlem Globetrotters and has made Belgium his home ever since. He played professionally for two decades, then moved into the coaching ranks for a dozen years.

In this installment of Tales from the Creek, Sam talks with Stan Cole about how he arrived at Campbell, life in Buies Creek, lifelong friends, making the move to Europe, and more.

It is like having a Baseball Encyclopedia in the room when former Major Leaguer Jim Perry stopped by Tales From the Creek. Perry played both baseball and basketball at Campbell from 1956-59 before going on to have a 17-year MLB career. Perry was a three-time all-star and the 1970 American League Cy Young Award winner for the Minnesota Twins. Perry made 447 starts and won 215 games, including a Major League-best 24 games during his Cy Young season. He is now a member of the Minnesota Twins franchise Hall of Fame.

Perry and his wife Daphne's generosity has been instrumental in the growth and success of the Campbell baseball program. Jim Perry Stadium first opened in 2013 and underwent a transformation in 2017 that included the addition of the Jim and Daphne Perry Pavilion to house locker rooms, offices, and meeting spaces.

Stan Cole's Tales From the Creek features Hall of Fame Softball Great Brittany Stanley Lee. She arrived in Buies Creek in the fall of 2006 and embarked on a career that undoubtedly places her face on the Mount Rushmore of Campbell Softball. From the pitching circle, she led the Camels to back-to-back ASUN titles and NCAA berths in 2008 and 2009 and was named tournament MVP both years. She set school career records for victories, strikeouts, and pitching appearances. Along the way, she was a four-time NFCA Academic Scholar-Athlete and ASUN All-Academic Team member. She is a member of the ASUN All-Decade team and earlier this year, she was inducted into the Campbell Athletics Hall of Fame.
