Can community power succeed where the criminal justice system has failed?
Tony Tidbit and Chris P. Reed sit down with Thena Robinson Mock, Vice President of Programs at the Public Welfare Foundation, for a powerful conversation about mass incarceration, criminal justice reform, youth justice, systemic racism, grassroots leadership, and coalition building.
Thena explains how the Public Welfare Foundation supports community-based organizations working to reduce incarceration, protect young people, develop alternatives to punitive systems, and place directly impacted people at the center of justice reform.
The conversation explores why incarceration has become deeply connected to economics, employment, politics, and public policy. Thena discusses how prisons can become financial engines for communities, how dehumanizing narratives influence punishment, and why reform requires more than changing individual laws.
She also shares lessons from the Igniting Futures youth justice initiative, including the different challenges facing coalitions in Tennessee and Michigan. While one coalition must defend against increasingly punitive policies, another is helping communities implement reforms that have already been approved.
WHAT YOU WILL LEARN
• How community-based organizations are challenging mass incarceration
• Why directly impacted people must help lead criminal justice reform
• How youth justice strategies differ across states and political environments
• Why collective leadership, resilience, and community care are essential to lasting change
