As promised many moons ago we're finally getting around to Top Ten Stadium Rock (Channel 4, 19th February, 2000), a retrospective TV programme now so old it needs its own retrospective. 

So join us for lots of talk about the same bands we always talk about. KISS! Heart! Poison! ZZ Top! Motley Crue! Yes, that’s only five, this is such a big subject we’re splitting it into two episodes. 

Also what exactly is “Stadium Rock”? How did they work out the ranking? Has the tone and attitude of late 90s/early 2000s telly aged badly? 

In addition to that we have our review of Iron Maiden LIVE, unabashed Lin Shaye fandom, stuff about Threads (and "Threads"), the rise of the machines, even more Sarsippius content, and some exciting PWM news for all listeners

Doro out of Warlock, but soon to be just Doro adorns the cover of this, the earliest edition of Metal Hammer we own. It's Halloween and there's weird stuff going on in the pages of this issue, though not the kind of weird stuff you might expect. 

Aerosmith's Steven Tyler is out and about in Germany, with some stories that probably need a content warning because they’re fucking gross, while Rush's Alex Lifeson can't see the point of making music videos. 

Some sort of early Guns n Roses backlash seems to be going on, while the idea that Alice Cooper would ever work with a female guitarist is deemed utterly improbable.

In other news we review Steel Panther and Winger LIVE, fail to remember the name of one of Def Leppard's biggest hits, recommend Rob Halford's autobiography, shamelessly petition Audible for a sponsorship deal, and reminisce about meeting the greatest artist in the world of Prog Rock.

Can I Pod With Madness episode 11 Metal Hammer Vol 3, No 17, (August 27, 1988) again - Special Ed

This episode, we take a deep dive into everyone’s favourite zombie cyborg murderer, mental patient and part time Egyptian deity, Eddie, off of the Iron Maiden album covers. Where did he come from? What’s his story? How long does he spend every morning doing his hair? We wonder what other musical mascots are out there - this Metal Hammer article seems to think there’s millions but only manages to suggest one.

We start off with the article but quickly just veer off into watching videos and getting increasingly frustrated with Google image search. 

Also, Bowling For Soup, Stargate, potential confusion between Daley Thompson's Decathlon and Hypersports, and more Chris De Burgh talk than is strictly necessary on an Iron Maiden podcast.

Ozzy is appearing at a charity show for Desmond Tutu, which we can find no evidence of, so perhaps this is proof of the Mandela Effect. Status Quo are Running All Over The World, due to a cunningly rerecorded version of their chug rock classic. Joan Jett’s in a movie with Michael J Fox. We fondly recall trying to play Slayer tunes on Guitar Hero. 

Def Leppard are ruthlessly mocked for not getting their follow up to Hysteria done in good time. More KISS pedantry ahoy in the letters page, which is exactly the kind of thing we can get onboard with, unlike certain selections from Gene Simmons’ solo output.

Judas Priest are on the road, ramming it down, and purveying... let me check... oh yeah, heavy metal. We workshop some unsolicited alternative names for Priest songs and end up just watching the video for Hot Rockin’.

We made an advert, a teaser, if you will, because both the market and THE GODS OF PODCASTING demand it. This is Can I Pod With Madness in a nutshell, and serves as both an introduction to the show, and as an excellent stand alone podcast for those who like to keep their listening to things under 1 minute 30 seconds.

It’s a very special episode of CIPWM as we go into the Mötley Crüe Cinematic Universe (The Crüeniverse) - we’re looking at The Dirt (Jeff Tremaine, 2019) - Netflix’s adaptation of the Crüe’s genital warts and all autobiography from 2001. Matthew Trippe doesn’t appear in this movie, nor does Pamela Anderson, or the drummer from Hole. We compare and contrast with Pam & Tommy, and ponder what other rock biogs should hit the big (or big-ish) screen. 

Can we reunite the Crüe with our loving tribute? Maybe (but we don't mention any of that shit because we recorded this about a month ago)

There’s money off Wolfsbane down at Little Kathy Wilson’s place! Lisa Dominique looms large over this issue, but doesn’t get the cover, the K! Team decided to go with the bloke from Testament. 

It’s summer 89, which means Batman, Bette (Midler) and Busters (Ghost). We’re talking Simple Minds, Sonia and Gloria Estafan and trying to work out who was on The 8.15 from Manchester. We reminisce about meeting the great and good, such as Elijah Wood, Judge Reinhold, Tony Hart and Wayne Sleep. Not metal, but all part of life’s rich tapestry. 

Meanwhile a 9 year old is shredding on the guitar - and for some reason David Lee Roth finds it a threat!

Returning to a week we previously covered in PWM03, today we’re looking at Kerrang 208 (Oct 8, 1988). Lovable Sheffield scamps Def Leppard are legit the biggest band in the world although you wouldn’t know it from those FASCISTS at Radio 1. Kerrang! Has a new feature - This Week in Metal which is suspiciously similar to Can I Pod With Madness.

Does Kerrang talk about Iron Maiden too much? (Spoilers: yes, according to this guy). We reminisce about escaping from The Leeds Festival in 2002, after waiting three hours to see Guns n Roses (or at least, The Axl and Buckethead Show). We ponder the solo works of KISS, and realise that it doesn’t seem right that Jane’s Addiction appear in the same magazine as Gypsy Queen and Great White. Also we cover Suicidal Tendencies and Infectious Grooves  - please note that this is now a Sarsippius fan podcast.
