    We’re taking “live podcast” to a whole new level.

    In this episode of Can I Riff?, we’re recording straight from the hospital while Lauren is literally in labor with our baby girl.

    We talk about the night everything started, her water breaking, getting to the hospital, the epidural, contractions, and all the nerves and excitement leading up to meeting our daughter. Somehow, in the middle of labor, we also manage to riff about pregnancy, getting your body back after having a baby, the realities of labor and delivery, and whether modern medicine has seriously not come up with a better way to check dilation.

    We also get into our family’s sports loyalties, the Pacers, Steelers, Chiefs and Colts, why fall might be the perfect season to bring home a newborn, and what life is about to look like as a family of five.

    There are ice chips, hospital interruptions, family cameos, questionable jokes, and a whole lot of anticipation.

    This is easily one of the wildest episodes we’ve ever recorded.

  • Ice, Kindergarten, Nesting | Can I Riff? EP12 - w/ Erik and Bailey

    The van is almost full, baby girl is almost here, and we’re still finding time to riff.

    In Episode 12, we record from our Honda Odyssey as we prepare for the arrival of our baby girl. With contractions happening during the conversation, the countdown to labor is getting very real.

    We talk about our boys’ love for van life, the transition to kindergarten, nightly homework, and the joy of raising our kids in a community filled with familiar faces. We also get into nesting, preparing the house for a newborn, and the ongoing struggle to keep enough ice in the freezer during an Indiana heat wave.

    A riff about ice turns into a more serious conversation about ICE, immigration enforcement in Indianapolis, Indonesian identity, and how different people experience fear and belonging in America. We share our personal perspectives on what’s happening in our community.

    Along the way, we attempt a couple of very unofficial commercial breaks for Hoosier Ice and our beloved Honda Odyssey. We close with a heartfelt reflection on our blended family, the journey that brought us together, and the gratitude we feel as we prepare to welcome another child.

    A few years ago, this life felt impossible. Now, we’re getting ready to fill the van.
