Upon its release, audiences and critics had no idea what to make of this offbeat dark comedy. As the years went on, it gained a cult following and is widely considered to be a classic of 1970s cinema. Hal Ashby never quite earned his plaudits while he was alive, but (partly due to Harold and Maude‘s cult following) generations of film fans consider him to be one of the greats.
