Yesterday’s announcement started with an unsurprising twist. We will all have to buy into the provincial QR code passport system as of January 4. A few weeks ago, we were promised that this wouldn’t happen. Surprise! The government moved the goalpost. All of a sudden, the claim has been made that there are so many fraudulent vaccine papers that we are all in mortal danger. Strangely enough, no numbers or data have been shared to support that claim. I don’t know about you, but most of the people I have encountered in public are already using the QR code because they claim it's easier and faster to enter public areas. My wife and I have been using our vaccine receipts that were downloaded from the Ontario health site. Not good enough now! Only the QR code will be accepted and every public area will have to scan and verify your personal health information. This is for our safety, apparently.  We are told that there are multitudes of dishonest people showing fraudulent passports all over the province in order to drink their Starbucks inside the building. No worries, though, because the provincial government has it all under control … a QR code will protect us all from dishonest people and mutating viruses. Big Brother is on it!

The Canadian military is in crisis, a crisis of leadership, of funding, of sexual misconduct accusations, and a crisis of morale. When one thinks of the military, one would normally think of teamwork, sacrifice, and having each other’s back. However, the situation of the past year and a half has added another element of crisis. A crisis of division, discrimination, and unfair treatment within the ranks.

While unfair covid policies and events have affected all military regiments, there are some events and situations being forced specifically upon certain members of a specific regiment recently. This regiment is a regular force light infantry battalion of the Canadian forces, and like all areas of CAF, are subject to the recent vaccine mandates and regulations being unfairly forced upon federal employees.
