Miami just put it in writing. On Oct. 2, the presidents and chancellors of Miami, Florida State, Clemson and North Carolina sent a joint letter to House Speaker Mike Johnson, Majority Leader Steve Scalise and Majority Whip Tom Emmer. They asked for two changes to the Protect College Sports Act, and both make it easier for a school to leave its conference. The Senate passed the bill 77-22 on Sept. 28. As it stands, it caps power conferences at 20 schools (up from 19, thanks to Sen. Ashley Moody's amendment) and makes a school that switches power conferences play three years as an independent first (down from five). The four schools want the cap raised to 22 and the three-year rule removed entirely. Miami took 13 players from the transfer portal this offseason. Four games in, one of them is the highest-graded quarterback in college football, and two of them never played a single snap. Here's every one of them: where he came from, how much he's actually playing, and what the stats and PFF grades say. Darian Mensah is 94 of 106. That's 88.7%, for 1,211 yards, 14 touchdowns and zero interceptions. At Duke last year he completed 66.8%. Among quarterbacks with at least 80 dropbacks, PFF has him No. 1 in the country in passing grade, with nine big-time throws and zero turnover-worthy plays. Cooper Barkate's stat line looks quiet. It isn't. He's run 95 routes to Malachi Toney's 103, which is nearly the same workload, but Toney has 37 targets and Barkate has 15. Barkate has caught 14 of those 15 with zero drops. Damon Wilson II is two different players. His PFF pass-rush grade is 78.1 and his run-defense grade is 47.0. Seven of his nine pressures came at Wake Forest, the one real game Miami has played. His run defense is the thing to watch at Clemson. And two are already gone.
