What if you don’t need to have a problem with your dog to want a deeper relationship with them?
Four years ago, I said goodbye to my heart dog, Curly, after 16 years together. Curly wasn’t a dog I needed to “fix.” I didn’t seek training because he had behavior problems. I simply wanted to know him better—to understand who he was, what he enjoyed, how he communicated, and what made our relationship special.
Over the years, Curly taught me that dog training can be so much more than teaching behaviors. It can be a conversation. It can help us understand our dogs on a deeper level, discover what makes them thrive, and build a relationship based on trust, communication, and shared experiences.
In this episode, I’m sharing some of Curly’s story and the lessons he taught me about looking beyond the behavior we see on the surface and asking a much more important question:
“What is my dog trying to tell me?”
We’ll talk about why you don’t have to have a “problem dog” to benefit from training, how paying attention to the individual dog in front of you can change your relationship, and simple ways you can start getting to know your own dog on a deeper level.
Because our dogs are so much more than the behaviors we want to change.
And sometimes, the best reason to train your dog is simply that you want to know them better.
You don’t need a problem to start training your dog. You just need a desire to know them better.
