In Episode 6, I spoke with 2 guests from Seoul, South Korea. about the 'A City of Han' project.

Sollee Bae is the editor of 'A City of Han', as well as the founder and organizer of 'Fiction Writers in Seoul'. Joining Sollee, was Ron Bandun, one of the contributing authors to the project. Ron also writes a column for the Korea Times.

A City of Han is a collection of short stories inspired by Seoul and other cities in South Korea. As the sleeve suggests, "there are three things a great city inspires: Romance, Music and Stories." The stories were written by expat writers in South Korea.

We get into how the project came together, some of the locations in and around my old stomping ground in Seoul, and themes within the anthology such as social hierarchy and the pressure to fit in.  We also discuss 'urban exploring' and whether South Korean literature can rival the success of K-Pop and Korean cinema.

Of course, there's also the Top 5 with both a musical and literary twist.

A City of Han is released on April 16th 2020 and published by FWS Publishing. It will be available on Amazon and select bookstores across South Korea.

In Episode 5 of The Can't Find My Way Home podcast, I was joined by Jonas Künne.

A couple of firsts! My first face-to-face recording (in the salubrious surroundings of my kitchen) and also my first German guest.

In his career to date, Jonas has featured as the frontman/guitarist of the band Black Rust, as well as a prominent solo artist. His second solo album “Between The Bars And Blinding Lights” will be released on April 2nd and we get into some of the inspiration behind the record.

There's also talk about how he got into the music scene, the places it has taken him to, and learning the business in the 'old school way'.

As well as punk bands, Norwegian Black Metal, ballroom's in Dresden, and a track from Jonas' first solo album.

Can't Find My Way Home is a podcast where Expats from around the world talk about the music and arts scene in their new home. 

In episode 4, I talk to Brian Aylward, a Canadian expat who now calls Bangkok home. 

Brian has been a Comedian for 15 years, performing more than 3000 shows in 24 countries.  Based on a bet made back in 2005, Newfoundland native Brian Aylward stepped on stage for the first time at a rowdy expatriate bar in Anyang, South Korea. 

Aylward went on to pioneer the active English stand-up comedy scene in South Korea, officially establishing Stand Up Seoul in 2009 and turning the country into a legitimate destination on the international comedy circuit. Aylward performed hundreds of shows across Asia, taking his own brand of humour to Vietnam, Singapore, Japan, Malaysia, Cambodia, India, Hong Kong, China, Indonesia, Thailand, Mongolia, Oman, Myanmar and more.  

Upon returning to his native Canada in 2010, Brian went on to become the twice finalist in SiriusXM Radio’s “Canada’s Top Comic” (2011/2013), a national headliner with Canada’s Yuk Yuk’s comedy clubs, and performed theatre tours across Newfoundland.  In 2014, Aylward set the unofficial Comedy World Record, performing twenty-one different 10 minute sets in one day at the Haebangchon Festival in Seoul, South Korea.  Brian has performed at many festivals around the world, including Just For Laughs 42, Halifax Comedy Fest, Hong Kong International Comedy Festival and the Magners International Comedy Festival. He has also appeared several times on CBC’s The Debaters.

 In 2018 & 2019, Brian headlined Best Kind Comedy Tour, playing to sold out theatre shows across Canada. In February 2017, Aylward's solo show “Big In Asia” was nominated for “Best Comedy” at Fringe World in Perth, Australia. In November 2016, Brian was awarded “Best Standup Comic” at the Canadian Comedy Awards. Aylward's numerous viral videos and sketch comedy character "Fadder" have garnered millions of views online. Nick and I talk about his Garbage Art Seoul project. How it all came about, the creative process and the seemingly never-ending problem of recycling and what to do with it. We also go into detail on his recent exhibition in Seoul, the move-away from over-reliance on social media, into something more concrete. We as a world entering 2019 need to start seeing environmental problems with a macro lens. the term "global" has rendered society passive. scales and magnitudes of issues have grown with the use of social media outlets. these warnings have become so immense that individual people become overwhelmed. unable to cure the world of its illnesses, individuals become defeated.  the global concept needs to be paired down to a local concept. a panoramic viewpoint must be sectioned off. The air, the land, and the sea must be approached as my towns air, my cities land, my county's water. We ought not to wait around for governments to make new laws. We must first follow the laws already in place. Simple steps toward a visual positive impact on our environment. Each individual is presented with a mix of issues. Each town, city, and country faces problems unique to itself. This is the power of collective society. Facing separate issues as one world. Together as these issues are solved locally, we will begin to eradicate them globally. This is why I started Garbage Art. Bringing to light the dumping and littering issues here in Seoul, Korea through beauty. Slowing the pace of life down in order to see the little things around us. I also saw how the natural beauty that already existed was being destroyed by garbage. Too busy and too concerned with self economics, are slowly losing the remainder of the natural beauty here in Seoul. I take their garbage and make it beautiful in Hope’s of one day saving the beauty that’s being covered up. It's always been there, we just need to find.

In this episode of Can't Find My Way Home, I was joined by David Tizzard.

David Tizzard came to South Korea in 2005, 15 years ago. Professionally he works at universities teaching politics, history, and Korean studies. He has a masters in Asian Studies and is finishing up a PhD in Korean Studies. He has made frequent appearances in the media, including hosting his own radio show, writing a weekly column in the newspaper, and appearing on tv shows.   

From a musical perspective, he has been playing here since 2006. He predominantly works as a guitarist, bandleader, and songwriter. His first band was a rock/funk fourpiece called The Decadent Gonads. After that, he started playing in a 3-piece that evolved from him on bass under the name Black Danger to him on guitar known as the Seoul City Suicides. This band played festivals around the country and appeared on radio. He also played in Bint Eastwood - a shortlived 4 piece playing original rock and roll. He has guest appeared for other bands on both bass and guitar, including for Glass Inspired led by Simon Upstone. In terms of tribute bands, he played bass in The Black Leather Lagoon, a Cramps tribute band known for the wild makeup and rowdy performances. He also played guitar for the Stoogicides, a Stooges tribute band.   

Now, he is the band leader of Tampas Dusk - an original retro-tinged rock outfit formed in 2012 with singer Andro Paris. They have played a series of festivals, last year included the Arirang Festival on a big outdoor stage in Kwanghwamun with famous hiphop act Dynamic Duo and a beach festival on the east coast. Tampas Dusk were recently featured in a tv program about David's life and are currently in the studio recording their first full length album - 8 years in the making.
