As we see in the Book of Nehemiah, in order to celebrate what Nehemiah and his people had done and who they would become, they first had to agree with God that something had to be done. When things get hard, do you find it easy to quit? In Scripture, Nehemiah was willing to sacrifice what was valuable to him, in order to keep going after what God had said. To go in the direction of God’s call today, we must grow in our spiritual strength, endurance, flexibilty, and resilience. How do you become someone willing to sacrifice to go in the direction that God has called? What might you need to start, stop, or modify?

What will it take to close the gap between where you are and what God wants for you? Nehemiah 2 provides a model for three courageous steps of obedience: Set down what's in the way of obedience, count the cost, and gather a team around you. When Nehemiah takes these steps, he begins to close the gap. What's one courageous step of obedience you can take this week?

In your life, where are the gaps between what is and what God says could be? In Nehemiah 1:1–11, Nehemiah realizes the gap between what he is living and what God had promised him. Nehemiah grieves honestly, taking ownership for his participation in the problem, he remembers that his condition is not his identity, and he asks God for help. This week, pray for God‘s vision over the gaps in your life.

In a world marked by distraction, how do we become a present people? Just as Jesus shows us, presence requires proximity. We can arrive well, show up ready, and stay all the way through, even while we acknowledge our human limitations. How does someone in Jesus live? Life can be challenging, and we are guaranteed to suffer many hardships. But as we are reminded in Acts 14, we don’t have to be surprised. Because of Jesus, you’re okay; remember who you are. He can steady you in the midst of a world that shakes us. Where is God inviting you to remember this and to speak courage into others?

Whose approval do you seek? In Acts 14, Paul and Barnabus experience a shift in the crowds, who go from praising their arrival to criticizing them and throwing them out of town. From this, we learn we can’t control what others think about us or the message we bring, but we can show up well and point back to God. How can you lean in to knowing you’re loved by God, pointing your heart back to Him and pointing your feet toward His work?
