Rob is down to his final two recommendations for the year on SAY HELLO TO MY LITTLE FILM! He’s wrapping things up with a one-two punch, starting with one of his favorite films by his favorite director, Robert Altman’s 1971 revisionist western MCCABE & MRS. MILLER! This New Hollywood twist on the classic genre stars Warren Beatty (DICK TRACY, BONNIE & CLYDE) as John McCabe, a wandering gambler who sets up a makeshift brothel in the small boomtown of Presbyterian Church. His business catches the eye of Constance Miller (played brilliantly by Julie Christie), a professional madame who pushes her way into a partnership that boosts the operation. But when the region’s largest mining company sets its sights on McCabe’s holdings and the town itself, his business skills are put to the ultimate test.

This landmark of the New Hollywood era showcases Altman at his finest, working with top-tier actors and crafting sepia-toned, textured visuals with the legendary cinematographer Vilmos Zsigmond, cementing its place as a pinnacle of 70s cinema.

For October's episode of HELLO MOVIES, MY OLD FRIEND Ray and Rob are revisiting one of the most infamous flops of the last 30 years, the 1997 Superhero film SPAWN! This adaptation of the Todd McFarlane comic series centers on Al Simmons (played by Micheal Jai White), a mercenary for hire who sells his allegiance to the devil after he dies in a double-cross on a mission in Asia. John Lequizamo (MOULIN ROUGE!, JOHN WICK) delivers a memorable performance as The Violator, a demon charged with recruiting Al, as well as set up the dominoes to bring on the war to end the world. With supporting performances by D.B Sweeney (THE CUTTING EDGE, EIGHT MEN OUT) and Golden Globe Winner Martin Sheen (THE DEPARTED, THE WEST WING) SPAWN was a film of the moment, and one that begs to be re-evaluated!

In pure Ray fashion, he has decided to NOT choose a Halloween themed film for his episode of SAY HELLO TO MY LITTLE FILM. Instead, he has decided to take Rob back to the 1960s, with the war/spy thriller WHERE EAGLES DARE! Some might call this a Clint Eastwood film, but the day belongs to Richard Burton as Major John Smith, the leader of a group of highly trained British spies who are tasked to drop in behind Nazi lines to save Brigadier General George Carnaby, a chief planner for the Western front. But when members of the team start turning up dead, Major Smith and his American counterpart Morris Schaffer (Clint Eastwood) must power through to complete the mission and uncover a truth that shocks the viewer to their core! Anchored by an second half action sequence whose fingerprints can be seen on many a modern action film, WHERE EAGLES DARE marks a shift in the war genre as the studio system gave way to New Hollywood.

The Halloween season zombie shuffles on here at CAR RAYROB! For this month's spooky installment of A COPY OF A COPY, Ray and Rob has decided to bite off more than they can chew by doing their first ever A Copy of A Copy of A Copy by looking at three horror classics! The first is F.W. Murnau's silent German horror classic NOSFERATU! To buttress this pop culture staple, they will be comparing it to two of its homage sequels, the 1979 NOSFERATU THE VAMPYRE directed by fellow German filmmaking giant Werner Herzog and 2024's NOSFERATU directed by modern horror darling Robert Eggers! All three follow the journey of the young real estate agent Thomas Hutter (Jonathan Harker in Herzog's film) as he travels to the Carpathian Mountains to meet with the elusive Count Orlok who is interested in purchasing a home in Hutter's hometown of Wisburg and the fallout that consumes the city, as well as Thomas's new wife Ellen (Lucy in Herzog's film). However, each film brings its own flavor to the story and expands on different elements of the central story. 

Loyal listeners know that horror is not Ray's bag, so Rob has done the unthinkable by convincing him to watch three in a row! Join us to find out how these films stack up to one another and hear if Ray actually enjoyed the experience!

It's the spooky season here at SAY HELLO TO MY LITTLE FILM! To kick things off, Rob has decided to push Ray into an arena he's not entirely comfortable in with the 2019 horror, ghost story THE DEEPER YOU DIG! Written, directed and starring the horror genre sensations, The Adams Family (HELLBENDER, THE HATRED)! 

THE DEEPER YOU DIG centers on Ivy and Echo (played by real life mother and daughter Toby Poser and Zelda Adams) who reside in rural upstate New York. Ivy is a tarot reader who has lost her sight and when Echo is tragically, and secretly, killed by their new neighbor, Kurt (John Adams), Ivy begins a quest to discover her daughter's fate as Echo takes revenge on the guilt-ridden mind of her killer. This low budget gem is a representation of the crafty storytelling genius of this resourceful family and a perfect entry point for Ray into the twisted world! 

Will Ray's reticence towards the horror genre prevent him from appreciating the what the Adam's Family was able to accomplish? Or will their uncanny ability to craft atmosphere lure him into their mesmerizing spell? Tune in this week to find out!

As we roll into Fall, we once again find ourselves with a five Monday month, which means it's time for a special Kid's Edition of SAY HELLO TO MY LITTLE FILM! Mr. Kitty Kaiju is back as Ray and Rob recommend one of their all-time favorite comedies from their childhood, the 1994 comedy classic DUMB AND DUMBER! This rite of passage film stars Jim Carrey (THE MASK, ACE VENTURA: PET DETECTIVE) and Jeff Daniels (SPEED, THE NEWSROOM) as Lloyd and Harry, two down on their luck losers who accidentally take possession of a briefcase full of ransom money for a rich socialite's (played by Lauren Holly) husband. When they decide to cross the country in an attempt to return it, they find themselves in an ever-escalating endurance test of stupidity in the hopes of finally finding the life they so desperately want but are too stupid to find. With supporting performances by Charles Rocket and the late Teri Garr, Dumb and Dumber helped cement The Farrelly Brothers as comedy staples and ushered in one of the most quotable films to ever exist.

This coming-of-age classic stars the great Sean Astin (LORD OF THE RINGS TRILOGY, THE GOONIES) and Wil Wheaton (STAND BY ME, STAR TREK: TNG). TOY SOLDIERS follows a group of rejects at a prestigious private school who must save their school from a band of terrorists who seek to force the release of their leader's father from an American prison.

For Ray's September Episode of SAY HELLO TO MY LITTLE FILM, he's trying to break up his streak of heavy subject matters by recommending the 2017 comedy THE BIG SICK. It centers on Kumail, a struggling comedian who is caught in the maelstrom of the Pakistani tradition of arranged marriage by his overbearing family. When he meets Emily, an American woman, she steals his heart but puts him in a very precarious familial situation, one that threatens to end his relationship with Emily for good. When a mysterious illness puts Emily in a coma, Kumail must decide what is truly important to him and how he wants to ultimately live his life. With stellar supporing performances by Holly Hunter (RAISING ARIZONA, HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS), Ray Romano (EVERYBODY LOVES RAYMOND) and Zoe Kazan (RUBY SPARKS, WHAT IF) and based on the semi-autobiographical tale of actor/comedian Kumail Nanjiani and his real-life wife Emily, THE BIG SICK is a singular romantic comedy cut from its own cloth.

This true American classic stars a Jack Nicholson (CHINATOWN, THE SHINING) in the iconic role of Bobby Dupea, an oil worker with a privileged past that he must confront when he learns his father has suffered multiple strokes and his days are numbered. Accompanied on his journey by his eccentric girlfriend Rayette (played by the powerhouse of 70s cinema Karen Black), Bobby searches for who he is and what he truly wants from life. Born from one of the great New Hollywood production companies, BBS Productions, FIVE EASY PIECES is the great American film that embodies the changing landscape of counterculture America and the evolving face of the Hollywood industry.
