In this episode, we interview Dr. Rebecca Byrd Brown from Duke University who is the author of the manuscript “A 1-Month Physical Therapy–Based Outpatient Program for Adults Awaiting Lung Transplantation: A Retrospective Analysis of Exercise Capacity, Symptoms, and Quality of Life” published in the April issue. In this interview we discuss the findings of this study and the role of physical therapists in pulmonary rehabilitation programs for patients both awaiting and following lung transplantation.

In this episode, we interview Dr. Alvaro Gurovich the winner of the APTA CVP Section Research Grant for 2017-2018. We discuss Dr. Gurovich’s work relating to blood flow and endothelial function in patients with cardiovascular disease. Additionally we also discuss the importance of basic science research and ways to improve the support and dissemination of this type of research in the physical therapy profession.

In this episode, we interview Dr. Christopher Brown from Texas Women’s University who is the author of the manuscript “Body Position Affects Ultrasonographic Measurement of Diaphragm Contractility” published in the October issue. In this interview we discuss the findings of this study and how measures of diaphragm contractility can be implemented across a variety of clinical settings.

In this episode, we interview Dr. Sandra Billinger from The University of Kansas Medical Center. We discuss her work which investigates the influence of vascular function in patients with stroke and the role of exercise therapy in this population. We also discuss her career as a researcher, including her experiences chairing the interdisciplinary scientific statement development group on exercise training for patients with stroke and the process of developing and directing a research lab.

In this episode, we interview Tamica Sturgess author of the July Publication “The Functional Difficulties Questionnaire: A New Tool for Assessing Physical Function of the Thoracic Region in a Cardiac Surgery Population.” We discuss the paper and the practical utility of the first validated functional outcome measure for patients following cardiac surgery. We also discuss the process of participating in research as a clinician.

In this episode, we interview Dr. Barbara Smith from the University of Florida and lead speaker for the talk at CSM 2018 titled “Respiratory Muscle Training Prescription: Endurance or Strength”. Dr. Smith is a leader in the field of respiratory muscle physiology. She shares some of her perspectives in this field of physiology as well as her experiences of conductive both mechanistic and clinical research as a physical therapist.

We discuss the evidence supporting blood pressure screening and the gaps in practice behaviors, as well as ways to improve screening.
