Imaging building a whole set for a major ballet performance, then, due to the pandemic, having to pull it all down again, before any performances. That’s what happened to Tim Moore, in Calgary, in March 2020. What’s Tim doing now while we wait out the pandemic? What are others in arts and entertainment doing? And what organizations exist to support people in an industry that’s used to feast and famine, but never a famine like This?

What to do if you have a career in airlines hotels conference centres, food service, all of which have been deeply affected by the pandemic?

What’s a flight attendant to do, during a pandemic? What are hotel and food services workers to do? Adam Pisarek works as an in-flight manager for Air Canada Rouge. Or I should say worked as an inflight manager. Due to his strong track record, his employer has kept him employed to wait  it out. What’s the job of an inflight manager? And how are airlines waiting it out? We speak to Adam Pisarek in the second part of today’s show.

But first, the pandemic has affected some sectors harder than others. Hospitality and food service is one of the most affected sectors by the preventive measures to avoid COVID spread. Businesses in Hospitality and food service have closed their doors resulting in massive layoffs. Ruth Rakoff is Director of Programs at Hospitality Workers Training Centre, a non-profit contributing to a strong hospitality industry. Normally, the Centre provided training to hospitality job seekers. During the pandemic, the Centre pivoted to support Toronto hospitality industry workers who are struggling, with practical resources on financial aid, food security, housing, and employment.

How do you manage a forest fire?   And how do you a get a job becoming a forest fire fighter? Later in today’s show we speak to an Ontario Wildland FireRanger Dean Rosen about his career story.

But first, how do you get around the stereotypes of an engineer job? You know, the designer in front of his or her workstation analyzing complex structures? Where are the jobs for those engineers who love working with people? Muneera Chowdhury found one. She’s an implementation consultant working with teams of people at client sites, implementing technical solutions. How did she get her job? What does she like about it?

When Naz Orang and Katie Sampson graduated with a PhD, they faced the dilemma of seeking an academic job, or exploring non-academic careers. Likewise when Darius Raisi and Alyssa Hermann graduated with a masters degree they faced a dilemma of entering a tough job market competing with both PhDs, and those with undergraduate degrees.

Deloyer’s shows tend to focus on conscious evolution and growth. This week, she discusses the powerful moment with Sara Bibb from MKS HR Consulting and the importance of Human Resources for small businesses.

Franklin recalls two moments. The first with Ray Robertson where they talk about Robertson’s new book, How to Die, A Book About Being Alive. The second is a discussion with Reinekke Lengelle, where they review her book, Writing the Self in Bereavement / A Story of Love, Spousal Loss and Resilience.

In a Career Buzz episode from 2012, I interviewed the team of Reinekke Lengelle and Frans Meijers. They shared their model of writing as a transformative tool for career management.  Reinekke and Frans were a professional team, and personally they were married. Sadly in 2018, Frans died. Working through her grief, Reinekke wrote. The result is her forthcoming book, Writing the Self in Bereavement / A Story of Love, Spousal Loss and Resilience. Reinekke Lengelle is assistant professor of interdisciplinary studies at Athabasca University and senior researcher at The Hague University, in The Netherlands. She is a poet, a playwright, and symposium co-editor with the British Journal of Guidance and Counselling.

During the pandemic, health officials and politicians can help us stay alive, but we need writers and philosophers to help us live. Ray Robertson’s newest book, How to Die: A Book About Being Alive makes the argument that we can't be truly fulfilled until we think about and reckon with death.

When his first novel, Home Movies, was accepted while he was enrolled in a Master of Fine Arts program, Ray Robertson says: “I went from old student to young novelist in one trip to the mailbox.”   Ray Robertson is the author of 13 books including Home Movies, 1979 A Novel, Lives of Poets, and most recently, How to Die: A Book About Being Alive. Born and raised in Chatham, Ontario, he now lives in Toronto.
