In Episode 25, I interview Dave McKeown, the author of The Self-Evolved Leader. McKeown is the CEO of Outfield Leadership, Former Accenture Consultant and Former COO and then President of Predictable Success.

In the interview, McKeown and I discuss how visionary heroic leaders like Steve Jobs, Mark Zuckerburg, and Elon Musk foster leadership environments where employees develop a syndrome McKeown calls "learned helplessness." In these cases, employees never reach their true potential because Hero Leaders swoop in and save the day before these employees can learn how to succeed. McKeown points to false "Urgency" as the primary reason why Heroic leaders exist. If you can eliminate Urgency, then a new type of leader can emerge, the Self Evolved Leader.

A bully negotiator is someone who will seek to intimidate you so that hey can get what they want out of a negotiation. Bully Negotiators will seek impossible terms in hopes of getting terms that are EXTREMELY favorable to them. Bully Negotiators will insult your intelligence, demean your organization and will threaten to elevate the negotiations to your boss just to get leverage over you. A Bully Negotiator's goal is to make you feel like a battered spouse so that you seek to please them and blame yourself.

In Episode 23, I interview Don Jones, author of the book "Be The Master: Achieve Success & Help Others."

Don Jones is a self-taught technology professional, starting as a night-shift AS/400 operator. He grew into tech leadership, and for over a decade as a freelance writer, speaker, and classroom teacher. Today he’s a Vice President for a major technology skills management firm. Don Jones’ formal education ended with his four-year aircraft mechanic apprenticeship. For everything else, he’s relied on experience, self-learning, and a massive amount of support from past and current bosses, leaders, and mentors.

Initially, Jones thought that he would never become a technologist. He was told in high school because he did not plan to attend college that he would not be successful in this field. In past episodes, I have suggested that you should think of yourself as a small business and that you should have a board of advisors. The Small Business Association published a statistic that says that businesses with a board of advisors are 75% more likely to stay in business past five years. If that works for small businesses, it would be equally valuable for individuals.
There is one drawback to having a personal Board of Advisors, mentor whiplash. According to Upramp.com, “Mentor Whiplash is the fatigue many mentees feel after working with several smart mentors, all with differing opinions and feedback.”

5 Ways to Avoid Mentor Whiplash
1.Have a clearly defined career strategy
2.Communicate all your career barriers and your skill weaknesses to ALL mentors
3.Have Your Mentors meet and communicate regularly (Quarterly if possible)
4.Communicate context to all mentors (garbage in - garbage out)
5.Get advice from people who have achieved what you hope to accomplish

In Ep 19, I discussed the 7 things you should consider re-hiring a former employee who left you for greener pastures. Why do I make this distinction? Many great and talented employees might leave you for family leave (pregnancy, medical, etc.). Under these situations, I follow the NFL axiom, "a player can't lose their job to injury." However, the circumstance is different when an employee decides to leave you to join a competitor and then after learning that the grass is not greener, they want to return.

I hope this episode helps you avoid any pitfalls around rehiring an employee who has left you for greener pastures.
