But since the invention of the Internet, we now have a series of tools that make it easy .cheap — if not free — in most cases — and provide you a way of reaching out to a world of opportunity that wasn’t ever possible before. The best way of telling people what you do and how well you do it is to tell somebody about it and one of the first things I tell most people to do is start a blog. A blog can be anything. Free services all over the place to set up a blog. WordPress. Blogger. Tumblr. Twitter can be considered a microblog if you will. The reason I start with a blog is when I talk with people I say “Well, what do you want to do?What are your skills? What are you interested in? What neat things  have you done?” They’ll start off saying “Oh I don’t have anything interesting to say. Everybody has something interesting to say. Everybody has some unique that they do, but they don’t have a place to tell people about it.

Taking that different drive to work. That’s another creativity exercise. They’ll tell people sometimes, “You’re thinking is kind of stuck?Go to work a different way that you’ve never gone before.” Turn off Waze and pick which way you want to go and just randomly go somewhere. Sometimes, if I’m not in a time crunch. I’m coming back from a client or something like that, I’ll just drive down the streets that I’ve never driven down before. There are streets in the San Fernando Valley — I’ve lived here 30 years — I’ve never driven down before and sometimes it’s just like “ahh, let’s take a right here.” It keeps your thinking fresh. It keeps that transition “muscle” — the flexibility muscle — toned. We know if we don’t use a physical muscle it atrophies and it makes it all the more harder to use it down the road. Same thing, to me, happens with transition and change. The less we change — the less we engage with change — the less comfortable we are with it.

This is going to sound really weird. I always get some odd looks when I talk about it in this way, but there are a couple of things you need to be doing — today — if you aren’t doing them already to start the opportunities coming to you. The word — the phrase you’re going to hear me say again and again and again in this next section is “You need to be showing people —
constantly — what you do and how well you do it.” If you are not doing that on a daily basis you are limiting yourself — you are limiting your opportunities and you’re putting yourself in the position of having to beg for a job. “What you do and how well you do it.” Now, as you can imagine, back in 1986 — 1980 — yeah 86 — when I entered the work market, the tools to do something like that — to tell people what you do and how well you do it — didn’t really exist.

I’m wearing my red power speaking socks that I always wear when Igo out to speak and sometimes just changing the color of your socks. Sometimes just changing how your brush your hair. It doesn’t — it’s not these gut wrenching, life altering, divorce-related, move to South Sea Island, changes in our life that we should feel that we’re trying to accomplish. We’re simply trying to “tickle” things a little bit.

Don’t be a groundhog from the Career Opportunities Podcast

From the Career Opportunities Archives…

For some odd reason, maybe because I grew up in an area that actually harbored groundhogs, I have always had an affinity for the large rodents and their namesake day of February 2. The groundhog is the harbinger of spring in my old area of the country and if he sees his shadow, he could be foretelling another 6 weeks of Winter, which was never a good thing when I was growing up in Ohio. The groundhog also had a slightly different meaning for me as I often saw human groundhogs all around me — people afraid of their own shadow, quick to duck back in their burrow and hide whenever adversity came along. As you might imagine, in your career you don’t want to be a groundhog. Let’s use this Groundhog Day as a reminder of that fact.

One of the largest problems of being a career groundhog is that you don’t just hide away from the difficult parts of life. Just as often you run away from the wonderful, exciting parts of life — the big challenges, the big opportunities that could take your career to the next level. It is quite normal to be scared of change, but you can’t let it stop you from engaging in those opportunities. Running away to your burrow is counter-productive in so many ways. It is always a retreat, a “hunkering down” for the six more weeks of winter that may never arrive.

This goes back to what I said about serendipity. We never know where great career opportunities are going to come from. They could just as easily come to us from the person sitting next to us at the Starbucks or whatever as they could from some formal job ad on Monster.com and sending in your resume and doing all of that. In fact, I believe that in this day the opportunities that come from the Starbucks person are going to be more plentiful and they’re also going to be more profitable and more to your liking. They’re going to be scary. They’re going to be different. They’re going to force you to think in new and different ways and they’re going to force you to think about flipping that job search over and start to do things that attract opportunity to you.

It’s an opportunity for you to readjust your course. To perhaps see where you’ve been on a path that is not the path for you. Which is perhaps why — layoffs are horrible because it usually has — in most cases — I would say 99% of the cases — it has nothing to do with you. A lot of us have been in that position. That project didn’t come through. That sale didn’t get made. Well, guess, what? We don’t have the work for the people we’ve staffed up to do. Take that to heart and see this truly as an opportunity for you to move beyond a company that is perhaps struggling or needs to evaluate its own priorities and evaluate your own. See this as an opportunity to get a little “kick in the butt” sometimes which we all need on many occasions and more forward.
