DJ Carl Michaels was just 16 when he bought a massive amount of DJ equipment, much to the chagrin of his father, who thought it was really irresponsible. More than 20 years later, that purchase ended up kicking off a passionate DJ career that very rarely strayed from house music.
Carl mixes varying flavors of house music to create a signature sound. He values a mix of familiarity and obscurity, and take pride in presenting quality music, served with a fast-paced, high energy mixing style.
Growing up in the Philadelphia suburbs, Carl would travel to 611 Records and buy vinyl to bring home and practice with. Soon enough, he was working for 611 under the guise of techno/rave luminary DJ and promoter Nigel Richards. Moving forward, Carl became store manager and house buyer for 611, soon helping launch Society Hill Recordings and managing the 611 Records label – overseeing mix compilation releases from heavy hitters like Derrick Carter, Dieselboy and Frankie carl-68Bones – eventually releasing his own commercially-released compilation, Disco Dub House.
Carl’s travels have taken him to many cities, and the early 2000’s had him bouncing all over North America.
Carl has held court at Philadelphia’s most prominent nightclubs. He opened the legendary Shampoo nightclub, and has held residencies at a wide-ranging mix of venues throughout the tri-state area. Today, he holds residencies at Voyeur Nightclub (formerly Pure, The 2-4 Club) along with Club Paradise in Asbury Park, NJ (owned by legendary producer Shep Pettibone), and Boxers Philadelphia.
As he presses forward, Carl is focusing on music production and producing unique deep house events.
