    I can’t believe I don’t have grey hair yet.
Doing one dental procedure in a month is a nail biter for us.  Doing 6 in two days was going to push us to the limits of what we thought possible, but nothing prepared us for how things can go sideways in an instant.

The Peter Emily International Veterinary Dental Foundation www.peteremilyfoundation.org/ is world famous for their charitable work; fixing big cat teeth.  In addition to volunteering their services, they bring vets who are training to learn from them and a slew of techs and their PR person.  We asked them to come help us address lingering dental issues for the tigers: Seth, Zabu, Gabrielle, Priya & Amanda and our cougar, Sassy.  Dr. Gingerich came up from The Pet Dental Center in Bonita Springs http://petdental.center/ to observe and help.  Our own vets, Dr. Justin Boorstein and Dr. Liz Wynn, of the Ehrlich Animal Hospital came as well, and Dr. Justin invited a vet from his practice, at the Humane Society of Tampa Bay, Dr. Christine Glenn.

The way the PEIVDF vets work is in pairs or trios, all working in the cat’s mouth at the same time.  All of the sedation and handling of the cats is done by the sanctuary and their own vets.  This is how they can complete so many procedures in such a short period of time.  Day 1 Saturday Oct. 7 was pretty amazing!

We had been preparing for this weekend for a year and there were two huge hurdles.  First was that we only had one working tiger transport cage and the other was that we only had one anesthesia machine and it was designed for dogs and cats; not tigers.  Through fundraisers and pleas for help with our wish list items we had managed to secure donors for 3 new transport cages and a tiger sized anesthesia machine with a ventilator.  (Huge shout out the Roselle and the MacLean families!)

I was gasping for every breath; hanging onto the railing so that I wouldn’t pass out from the lack of oxygen, but I kept climbing because I knew that just a few steps away there was a mecca of like minded people (800+) who are changing the world.  That was the scene about a dozen times a day during my week in Jackson Hole at the Cat Summit because I live at 7 feet above sea level and Jackson Lake Lodge is close to 7,000 feet above sea level.  Between my room and both levels of the conference, it meant taking the stairs up and down three levels in between each hour long session.

The rock stars of the Cat Summit were Dereck and Beverly Joubert.  They have worked primarily in Africa on big cats for over 30 years.  They are the cofounders of the Big Cats Initiative with National Geographic and were recipients of eight Emmys, a Peabody, Panda awards, the World Ecology Award and the Presidential Order of Meritorious Service by the President of Botswana.  The Jouberts are also involved with the Great Plains Conservation Foundation which was established to protect wild land, and is presently managing over one and a half million acres in Africa.

George Schaller is a field biologist with the Wildlife Conservation Society and Panthera.  He has studied and helped protect such species as the mountain gorilla, tiger, giant panda, and snow leopard.  These have been the basis for his books, among them The Year of the Gorilla, The Serengeti Lion, The Last Panda, and Tibet Wild.  He continues his field work particularly in China, India, and Brazil.

Our good friend and ally at CITES, Debbie Banks from the Environmental Investigation Agency was there.  She’s the Campaign Leader for Tigers & Wildlife Crime and has over 20 years of experience investigating environmental crime with the Environmental Investigation Agency (EIA), including illegal wildlife trade, illegal mining and illegal trade in ozone depleting substances. She has developed, deployed and participated in overt and covert investigative teams to obtain incontrovertible evidence in the form of video and audio recordings, and ensured that EIA investigation findings are backed up with robust desk-based research and analysis. She has been with EIA since 1996, investigating, exposing and campaigning against the illegal and unsustainable destruction of tiger habitat, illegal trade in tigers and other Asian big cats, and tiger “farming".

We met Carlton Ward and hope to get to know him a lot better.  Carlton is a National Geographic Explorer focused on the story of the Florida panther as a call to action for protecting the Florida Wildlife Corridor – a campaign he helped establish through two 1000-mile expeditions that mapped and connected conservation priorities from the Everglades to Georgia and Alabama.

I was invited to speak by Jeff Flocken who is the North American Regional Director for the International Fund for Animal Welfare where he leads the organization’s team of legislative professionals in the US and Canada advocating for global, national, and local policy initiatives on behalf of animals.  Jeff serves on the Board of Directors of the Jaguar Conservation Fund, the Steering Committee for the IUCN Tapir Specialist Group, and is an Advisor to the Grace Gorilla Sanctuary.  He is also the founder and board co-chair of the Emerging Wildlife Conservation Leaders initiative which mentors and provides campaign training for up-and-coming leaders in the wildlife field.  He is the coauthor of the book Wildlife Heroes.

On my panel, which covered the impact media can have saving animals, using examples of Cecil Lion and the Zanesville massacre, was Ian Michler who has spent the last 27 years working as a safari operator, specialist guide, consultant and photo-journalist across Africa. Currently, he is the Consultant and Lead Character for the campaign documentary Blood Lions (www.bloodlions.org). Ian lives in South Africa where he is co-owner of Invent Africa Safaris www

Jade the Leopard has Passed Away
posted Sep 27, 2017, 5:16 PM by Jamie Veronica to volunteers

Jade  began feeling poorly this past weekend, she was sedated on Monday for an exam and nothing too abnormal was found other than a stomach full of food despite having not eaten for two days. She never fully recovered from sedation and was re-examined again today. The food in her stomach still had not digested according to x-rays. She passed away shortly after she was sedated this afternoon. A necropsy was performed again nothing too abnormal  was found. Samples were sent to the lab for analysis.   She may have had a poor reaction to anesthesia, suffered from a stroke, or had a tumor in her brain. Results from the tissue samples sent in may tell us more, however they may not. https://bigcatrescue.org/jade/

    Little Dove has passed away
Note to volunteers:  Jamie and I found Little Dove passed away this am.  She looked like she passed away peacefully asleep in her favorite big den.   As of her last exam she had end stage kidney disease so we knew this was coming.  She was our oldest cat at 24 years old, she was loved and spoiled by all her keepers.

    Little Dove
    Female Bobcat
    5/12/93 - 9/24/17
    Rescued 5/27/93

9/24/17  Little Dove was our oldest bobcat when she died last night, in her sleep, in her favorite den.  She was the last of the original 56 bobcats and lynx who had been rescued from a fur farm in 1993.  She died on the first day of the Cat Summit at the Jackson Hole Film Festival where 650 non profits and media producers have convened to work together to save exotic cats.  I guess she just had to be here in person to witness it.

Those who watch our nightly walkabouts in Facebook knew Little Dove as the bobcat who loved her coolaroo hammock bed and who insisted on breakfast and dinner in bed every day.  If you rode with us every couple of hours during the live broadcasts we did, patrolling the sanctuary during Hurricane Irma, you know that she was the one cat we worried about most, but she slept blissfully in her den through all of it.  Her keepers loved her immensely and she will be greatly missed.  You can post your tributes to her at https://bigcatrescue.org/little-dove/

    Cool Milestones
More than 2,000 Calls of the Wild have now been made at BigCatAct.com

Our YouTube channel just surpassed 500,000 subscribers!

    Carole’s Corner

Another crazy day.  I got to ride my bike to work for the first time since Hurricane Irma was threatening us a couple weeks ago.  It felt good.

Got to the sanctuary in time to do a quick check on things and then headed over to the “Goose House” as Howie insists on calling the Meeting House (because he bought a plastic goose to sit in the yard) for our staff meeting.  A bank had rented the Lion’s Lair Party Pavilion, which is where we usually have our meetings and where a lot of us have our offices.  Staff meetings are usually an hour and a half but pretty interesting.  Kathryn gave us an update on the bobcat kitten rescue that she coordinated yesterday.  I had updated you guys, but our staff hadn’t been updated.

Then a call came in from a man in Apopka, FL.  He said he’d caught a bobcat and that he’d already shot five of them over the years for going after his chickens.  Sometimes I think these calls are the Universe testing my patience.  I can’t legally take the bobcat from him, because I can only do that if it is injured, and I have to return a bobcat, after rehab, back to the same spot, if possible.   I have to be careful how I word that though, because I don’t want him to hurt the bobcat so that I will come get him.  I also have to be careful, because those who hate us for ending the trade in exotic cats, are always trying to set us up to break the law.

It led to a very long discussion about how to properly pen up farmed animals at night and ways to prevent becoming a bobcat buffet.  I let him talk, and talk and talk, as these callers always do, and then did my level best to be friendly and understanding while explaining that he “clearly saw that killing bobcats wasn’t fixing his problem.”  I explained how he might see a trend, if he’s observant of the timing, of youngsters who haven’t quite mastered their skills, and that if he can just incorporate more ways to deter the bobcats, he may prevent killing one of nature’s most magnificent creatures.

I went on about how people would pay to see bobcats at close range, like he claims to do all the time, and that maybe he could generate funds for his pens by setting up trail cams and live webcams.  By the end of it all he decided that bobcats were just too amazing to snuff out, like he’d done in the past.  He said he was going to take the cat a long way away and set him loose.  I told him that I couldn’t advise him to break the law like that, but that it would really make me happy if he did give the cat another chance.

Yesterday we got two rescue calls.
The first one was someone saying they had a serval that “needed rescuing.”  I called them back, but haven’t heard any more.  I don’t know if it is an owner trying to dump their pet or if someone thinks we can just swoop in and take a serval away from someone who shouldn’t have it.

The second one was pretty heart breaking.  Animal Control, in the Port Charlotte area, was called to the scene of an accident where a mother bobcat had been hit by a car and killed.  The witness, who sat with the bobcat as she died, saw kittens across the road.  The Animal Control officer said the mother was not lactating, so the kittens must have been weaned, but no one knew for sure if they were old enough to survive.  A road mowing crew arrived right after the accident and the kittens ran into the woods.

Operations Manager Kathryn took a posse of three car loads of people, I think, to the scene at 601 Rotunda Blvd W Port Charlotte, FL to search for the kittens.  Afton helped them out by sending recordings of Cooper Bobcat to play, in the hopes that the kittens would hear bobcat sounds and reply.  No sound came back from the dense underbrush.  Kathryn has friends in the area and we will continue to seek out tips, but looks like these little guys are on their own now.

    Carole’s Notes

I’ve been working on my presentation at the wildlife film festival.  I have to get it down to 4 minutes.  So far, if I describe the 3 prong approach at all, it goes to 5.5 min.  Still working on editing it down, or talking faster.  Maybe I will practice on you guys during a LIVE Facebook walkabout?

10/18/2011, Terry Thompson, out of jail 2 weeks, set free 56 lions, tigers, bears, cougars, wolves and other wild animals.

Cut the doors off the cages, committed suicide, apparent goal was to wreak as much havoc as possible with his last actions.

His horrific act of violence against the animals, and the community, turned out to be a catalyst for change.

Animal protection groups had been trying for years to ban the private possession of big cats.

1/6/2011 Ohio’s outgoing Gov Strickland passed emergency executive order to require registration of dangerous wild animals and ban criminals from possessing them.

3/2011 Incoming Gov. Kasich allowed the order to expire

7/2011 IFAW hosted 11 orgs, 18 million supporters, to come up with a 3 prong approach to ending the big cat crisis.

    • Generic tiger
    • USDA cub handling
    • Fed ban on private possession and cub handling

The 11 org coalition, which included IFAW, HSUS, Born Free & Big Cat Rescue, knew that the next major tragedy involving big cats was just right around the corner, because in our world it’s pretty common place news.

10/18/11  When law enforcement had to find and kill 18 Tigers, 17 Lions, 8 Bears, 3 Cougars, 2 Wolves, 2 Monkeys it was a 24 hour long blood bath that came to be known around the world as The Zanesville Massacre.

No matter where you go, when you say “Zanesville Massacre” people know the story.  What made it so memorable, was that people just could not believe that it could be legal to privately own such dangerous animals.

So why is it still legal?  Celebrities have a lot of power in Washington and there are several people who have made their fortunes and found their fame by taking cute baby lions, tigers, snow leopards and other wild animals onto talk shows.  Some of the most well known claim to be there with babies from their affiliated zoo, but most of those babies are actually bred by private owners for the pay to play trade.

Those breeders would be banned under the Fed law we lobby for.  The celebrities are doing all they can to thwart our progress.  Media has hampered change by pandering to the romantic notion that you can touch the wild and be held out as a Lion Whisper.

    Cheetah Kittens in Peril
I still don’t have power at my home, but my phone holds a charge over night so first thing this morning; before I went out for coffee, I get a call from someone in distress.  She’s in NJ and used to care for big cats 30 years ago, but she’s the only person that a South Sudanese couple knew to call.  What happened in Sudan was that a cheetah mom was killed, leaving behind orphaned kittens.  They couldn’t find any info on what to feed them or how, so they called their friend in NJ who called me.  I gave them the info I had and told them to not try and make pets of them, as that never works out for the cat.  I suggested finding a cheetah conservation center as quickly as possible.

Then I get an email from a couple who want to take their Toyger (it’s a Bengal cat hybrid) into Hawaii because they want to move there.  This is what I sent to them:

Even though you, and others on the Internet are saying that Toygers are not hybrids, they are because they are the result of breeding Bengal cats with domestic cats.  Bengal cats are hybrids, thus all of their offspring are hybrids too.  They are just one more generation removed.

I am no expert in HI rules / laws re: hybrids, but they have been smart to ban them because they cause so much damage to local wildlife when they escape.  No one should be breeding hybrid cats, or buying them, because it never turns out well for the cat. Most states take the stance that if it looks like a duck, walks like a duck and quacks like a duck; it must be a duck.  It sounds like your cat will certainly be viewed as a hybrid.

I believe you have an obligation to the cat for the rest of the cat’s natural life; thanks to your desire to “touch the wild” and participate in a trade that is so broadly known to be cruel.  For the cats,  Carole Baskin, CEO of Big Cat Rescue

I’m sure I came across as rude, but I’m just sick of people being selfish and supporting the cruel industries that cause so much abuse and then wanting me to help them get away with evading laws that were enacted to protect animals.

Update:  The hybrid’s owner emailed me just now and said they have decided NOT to move to Hawaii because of the uncertainty for their pet.

    JoJo CaraVel has been euthanized
9:57 AM Carole Baskin  to volunteers:

This morning JoJo was laying on his side, unable to move anything but his eyes.  Jamie rushed him to the Humane Society of Tampa Bay to see Dr. Justin.  The ultrasound of JoJo's heart indicated that it was not able to contract normally, which was cutting off circulation to all of his limbs.  All of his major blood vessels showed little to no blood flow.  There was nothing we can do to repair his failing heart, which is likely malformed, like most of his other organs, due to the un natural cross breeding of serval to caracal, so we made the sad decision to euthanize.  When Dr. Justin gets off work today he will come to the sanctuary to do a necropsy to see if there is anything more we can learn from the situation.  Hissy as he was, JoJo was much loved here and will be missed.

    The Days After Hurricane Irma
Monday September 11, 2017.  It may be 9-11 but we didn’t have to call 911.  Big Cat Rescuers went out at 4PM, 7PM, 8PM, 9PM-11PM, 3AM and 7AM and we are still out there.

The worst of the damage was done to the metal awning over the tour waiting area when a tree became completely uprooted and fell onto the cabana and the corner of the gift shop.  We heard it hit at 3AM and Big Cat Rescuers, Jamie, Dr Justin, Kathryn and Victor ran out to secure the area and make sure the bobcats who live in that area, Moses and Bailey, were safe.

We didn’t see the next bit of major damage until after checking to be sure all lions, tigers, leopards and cougars were secure.  We then walked all of the small cat areas to be sure no trees had snapped off, leaving holes in the caging.  A HUGE branch came down on Pharaoh the white serval’s cage, but the way our cages are built, it just crushed the rounded cage, like a coke can, but did not leave a hole in the cage for escape.  Pharaoh has about four cages hooked together, and could have fled into any of his other rooms, but instead he was just laying there, looking out from one of his dens, at the damage as if to decide whether or not he liked the look.

We had been so worried about Little Dove, our most elderly cat at the age of 24, but by 7AM she had left the tree stump den she used over night, to get back on her Coolaroo.

All the ailing cats, Babycakes the genet, the rats and Cooper Bobcat did fine with Gale over night.  Cooper was taken back out and released into his rehab enclosure, but he will be kept in the small side until we figure out what’s going on with Hurricane Jose.  All the domestic cats and foster kittens did fine in the Gift Shop overnight; as did the volunteer’s dogs.  Most are going home, if they have power.

We have power at the north end of the property for Food Prep, the Gift Shop, the Kitten Cabana and volunteer housing at the north end.  We have no power at the south end which includes all intern housing, both sets of offices, Gale’s house, Kathryn’s house, Karma’s house, Lauren’s house and my house.

There was a tree down across Easy Street this morning so no one could get in or out.  That took a while to cut up with a chain saw and haul off.  Now we are turning our attention to the pumps to move some water.  We have cancelled tours for today and maybe tomorrow too.

If you have any interest in who I really am please start at the beginning of this playlist: http://savethecats.org/

I know there will be people who take things out of context and try to use them to validate their own misconception, but you have access to the whole story.  My hope is that others will recognize themselves in my words and have the strength to do what is right for themselves and our shared planet.
