  • "Where the Story Begins” - Transatlantic Slave Trade (1500s–1800s)

Every story has a beginning—and to understand the history of race in America, we have to go back to where the story begins.

In our first episode of Carrying the Dream, Charles Woods III and Chaz Culp explore the Transatlantic Slave Trade and the centuries of history that shaped America long before the Civil Rights Movement. We examine how millions of Africans were forcibly taken from their homes, the systems that allowed slavery to grow, and the lasting impact this history continues to have on our country and our relationships with one another.

But this episode isn't just about history. It's about understanding how the past helps explain the present—and why learning about difficult parts of our shared history can create opportunities for honest conversation, empathy, and connection.
