Genesis 22:1 “And it came to pass after these things, that God did [TEST] Abraham,...” Sometimes the purpose of God brings us through circumstances that we really DON’T UNDERSTAND. And you DON’T know WHY you are going through WHAT you’re going through! How will your respond when your faith is tested?

As Abraham walked with God he proved himself trustworthy, so much that the Lord entered into a Covenant relationship with him and his descendants. Genesis 15:18 “In the same day the LORD made a covenant with Abram...” A Covenant is AN AGREEMENT between two parties that is binding upon each to fulfill to the greatest of their ability the conditions of the covenant. A Covenant is a two way street. God has HIS Part. “I’m going to bless you . . .” But Abraham also had a Part - “his part was TRUST and OBEDIENCE!” With the blood Covenant there was symbols that were tokens of a reminder of the Covenant. In Abraham’s day it was the token of circumcision the shedding of blood that would remind his descendants of the Covenant. We too, have a tokens of the New Covenant established in the body and blood of Jesus Christ. It is important that we REMIND ourselves regularly that we are in COVENANT with FATHER GOD. We do that today by the SYMBOLS of Covenant!

After the birth of Isaac, the son of promise, Sarah saw three disruptive things that could have a harmful effect on the character and life of her son. She admonished Abraham to separate from and CAST OUT these things and the Lord agreed. Although it was painful, Abraham obeyed God and CAST OUT that which was symbolic of the FLESH.

Abraham literally walked with God through difficult times of sorrow and in times of great joy and blessing. The Lord had promised Abraham MANY descendants but as he and Sarah were advanced in age the promise had NOT been fulfilled. At the right time, the Lord passed by and once again confirmed His promise. And at the set time the promise came, and Sarah’s mourning was turned into laughter! God hears your dry and He see’s your tears! At the appointed time He will visit you and when He does, your SORROW will be turned to JOY!

His response in those times was not what we would look to as a great example of FAITH, but rather demonstrated the FAILURE of depending on the flesh. Yet in spite of his own failures God intervened and turned his failure into blessing. Our weaknesses and failures do not disqualify us from God plan and purpose in our lives! God’s GRACE and MERCY is greater than OUR WEAKNESS!

Pastor Alexander continues the series on the Life of Abraham, a FRIEND of God and the father of FAITH, as our EXAMPLE of “How to WALK with God.” What’s interesting is to also study the life of Abraham’s nephew Lot, who stands as an EXAMPLE of a person who made RIGHT and WRONG choices in life and REAPED what he had sown. Lot’s choice of dwelling places illustrates his spiritual journey, and speaks to us of ours as well. We too make MISTAKES along life’s journey. We need to LEARN what prompted Lot to make WRONG choices to help us NOT REPEAT his mistakes in our spiritual journey of walking with God!
