He is one of the most famous interpreters of Yiddish songs. He was born in Rotterdam in 1912. Just before the Second World War he left for the US. He survived the war, but the rest of his family was murdered by the Nazis. After the war Leo Fuld became known as the interpreter of Yiddish evergreens. When he was 80 he returned to the Netherlands where he recorded one more album, The Legend.

One of the founders of the levenslied was born in Rotterdam in 1883. Louis Davids grew up in a Jewish fairground family and was brought up with a love of singing. In 1909, Louis Davids left for a tour to England where he got ideas for his revue shows in the Netherlands. He translated English songs into Dutch and achieved success with them. With his songs De kleine man (The little man) and Als je voor een dubbeltje geboren bent (If you were born for a dime), Louis expressed the sense of crisis of the Dutch in the thirties. Louis Davids died in 1939, a few months before the Second World War broke out.

During World War II, Max van Praag had to go into hiding because of his Jewish background. He scored many hits in the fifties. Since 1958, he organized the Loosdrecht Jazz Concours annually. He opened a gramophone record store in Utrecht on the Amsterdamsestraatweg and in 1974 a store in the Hoog Catharijne shopping center. However, in the eighties, Max was forced to close his stores. In 1991, he died from Parkinson’s.

    C U B A  S P E C I A L  :  Omara Portuondo | Compay Segundo | Carel Kraayenhof | Gloria Estefan | Rubén González | Guillermo Portabales. Producer Cobie Ivens

Omara Portuondo (1930) an icon in Cuban music, has an impressive career. In 1945 she was part of the Las d’Aida Female Cuarteto and in 1959 her debut solo album Magia Negra was released. She sang with Orquesta Aragón, Chucho Valdés and Maria Bethânia. In 1998 she was part of the renowned Buena Vista Social Club project, which brought her international fame and with which she toured the whole world. Her album Gracias (2009) even earned her a Latin Grammy award for Best Contemporary Tropical album.

Compay Segundo (1907) shone on the album Buena by Buena Vista Social Club. His solo album Calle Salud was recorded in early 1999 in studios in Havana, Paris and Malaga. On this album he sings old compositions by Francisco Repilado, Carlos Gardél, Enrique Jorrin and Miguel Matamoros. The dance styles on Calle Salud are son (an old Cuban dance in which salsa originated), bolero, cha cha cha and merengue. The music therefore does not differ much from that of Buena Vista Social Club. The collaboration of Charles Aznavour is striking, who sings a translation of Mourir D’Aimer with Compay Segundo.

Carel Kraayenhof, With his bandoneon he roams the world and likes to mingle with people. Carel listened to stories from the past and present. African refugees trying to reach Lampedusa. Tula, the Spartacus of Curaçao who, with a thousand slaves, let a cry for freedom be heard. Young musicians in Jujuy (Northern Argentina) without a bandoneon, who play cardboard boxes out of necessity. A tribute to the Jewish writer Ida Vos who wrote the book 32 Tranen, 32 poems for the children of her school class who did not return after the war. These stories inspired Carel Kraayenhof to write new compositions and that is how he came up with the idea for a new theatre show, in which the Argentine Tango and the Cuban Son/Danzón play a role.

Gloria Estefan, the title of the album 90 Millas refers to the distance between Cuba and the southernmost point of Florida, where many Cuban refugees live. Gloria composed the music together with her husband and brothers. It is a tribute to her native Cuba. The album features no less than twenty-five guest musicians who have meant a lot to traditional and Cuban or modern Latin music and contains original material and a selection of different Cuban rhythms mixed with Latin American contemporary pop.

Rubén González was a Cuban pianist. In 1943 he released his first recording, which quickly made him famous in Cuba and the rest of Latin America. Since the sixties he played for 25 years in Havana in the band of Enrique Jorrin. In 1996 Rubén González came with a new solo album Introducing…Rubén González. In 1997 he played on an album Buena Vista Social Club. The director Wim Wenders made a biographical film under the same name about Rubén González and his colleagues, which made him famous in the rest of the world. He performed for the last time in Mexico and Cuba in 2002. He died in December 2003.

Guillermo Portabales was born in 1911 in Cuba. He was a singer, songwriter and popularized the guajira style. At the beginning of his musical career he played various styles, such as cancion, tango and bolero, but he soon noticed that guajira was the most popular with his audience. In 1940 Guillermo Portabales performed regularly in Cuba and the United States of America. In the 1960s he discreetly expressed poetic thoughts in his music about the revolution that was taking place in his home country Cuba. Guillermo Portabales eventually died at the age of 59 in a car accident.

    Happy Valentines Day

This is the first Dhol Foundation studio album by Johnny Kalsi and his students from the Dhol Foundation institute in London. The Dhol drum is a traditional percussion instrument from the Punjab province in northern India, where Johnny Kalsi comes from. In London he experimented with dance beats and electronic music, which he mixes with the traditional bhangra style in his albums.
Their music has been heard in Hollywood films such as Gangs of New York and The Incredible Hulk, and they have collaborated with Peter Gabriel on the soundtrack of the film Rabbit-Proof Fence.

With Sacred Thread saxophonist Charles Lloyd concludes his Trio Of Trios: three albums with three different trios led by him. The contribution of the Indian tabla player and singer Zakir Hussain is particularly valuable in this respect. For example, the song Kuti is based on a composition by Hussain. Lloyd knows his way around the atmosphere and form of Indian classical music very well and approaches the sound of a bansuri with his transverse flute solo. The third and youngest member of the trio, guitarist Julian Lage, once again proves himself to be an all-rounder. With a tasteful combination of virtuosity and sensitivity he supports Lloyd and Hussain.

WANDERING AROUND JEWISH MUSIC : Classical compositions by the Russian Mikhail Gnesin, Klezmer by the Shtetl Band Amsterdam, Ladino by the Bosnian Flory Jagoda & Family.

    Mikhail Gnesin.
The tribute to the Jewish songs and chamber music of Mikhail Fabianovich Gnesin (1883–1957), is a publication of the Dutch Foundation for Jewish Music Projects, founded on 27 March 2001 in Amsterdam.
The music of Mikhail Gnesin was a find, his music was virtually unknown in the West. Even in Russia it was not very well known, where Jewish music was forgotten during the repressive Stalinist regime.

    Shtetl Band Amsterdam.

Traditional Klezmer pieces combined with new compositions in the village-klezmer style. Shtetl Band Amsterdam has developed in recent years into a treasurer of the original klezmer music enriched with the clarinetist Christian Dawid. In the meantime, The Amsterdam Klezmer Society has taken over the torch and continues this music genre with several musicians: Bert Vos (violinist and bandleader), Lefke Wang (violinist and poykenist), Eva van de Poll (cellist, zagist and poykenist), Elianne van Ee (accordionist and vocals), Shura Lipovsky (guest soloist: vocals) and Christian Dawid (guest soloist and clarinetist).

    Flory Jagoda & Family.

She grew up in a family of singers. Her childhood, in a mountain village outside Sarajevo, Bosnia/Herzegovina, was filled with songs sung in Ladino—the language passed down by Jews expelled from Spain during the Inquisition—that told of the loves, lives, and rituals of her community. With the horrors of World War II, all that changed. Flory Jagoda and her parents were the only survivors of the 42-member Altaras family. Since then, Flory, a 2002 NEA National Heritage grantee, has dedicated her professional life to composing, performing, and teaching songs that preserve her memories of that lost life. Her songs, sung in Ladino, echo the Spanish and Bosnian melodies and rhythms of her past.

Her grandparents were nomads and her parents were school teachers. She studied music at the local college and in Moscow to continue her music studies there. She also immersed herself in various Siberian traditions and in Tuvan and Mongolian throat and overtone singing. In 1988 Sainkho started working with various musicians from the Soviet Union, with the aim of mixing traditional ethnic elements with avant-garde styles. She was a key member of the ensemble Tri-O. Their music was a mixture of exotic melodies, throat and overtone singing, jazz, ambient etc.

During her travels, she learned techniques from fellow composers and artists, particularly the breathing methods used by Siberian shamans and Canadian Eskimos for their ritual songs. In recent years, she has been working on specific voices and interpretations under her mythological name, Ojanna, and was in the Netherlands to present her ethnographic research as a documentary film. The songs are Csangó folk songs from Transylvania, as well as renditions and interpretations from Siberian and Uralian Tuvan, Bashkir, Altai and Khakas cultures.

A nice anecdote: traditionally it was believed that if women practiced khoomei they would become infertile, fortunately this popular belief is starting to wane and more and more women are practicing khoomei. In addition to Khoomei, the Tuvans have three other typical singing styles, of which Igor Koshkendey gives examples. He is accompanied by various instruments: a lute with two strings, a violin with two strings and a trapezoid harmonic sound box, a flute and a drum used by shamans during their rites.
