DAN PERKINS IS HERE TO HELP... Network started airing Ken Burns' 10-part series Sunday night, but VA and PBS have come prepared. FIND OUT ABOUT SONGS AND STORIES FOR SOLDIERS WEBSITE: songsandstoriesforsoldiers.us VETERAN PTSD CHARITY FOUNDER: Dan Perkins is the Co-Founder and Board Member of Songs And Stories For Soldiers. NOW IN 47 FACILITIES ACROSS THE USA... "PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) is a sinister byproduct of war; it affects countless veterans, sometimes long after their service has been completed. And it has likely led to the staggeringly high suicide rateâ??22 men and women per dayâ??among vets these days. Although it may make its own appearance in PBSâ?? new 10-episode Vietnam War documentary, which began airing last night and is produced by Ken Burns and Lynn Novick, PTSD could rear its ugly head for some veterans who choose to watch the series. According to Texas Public Radio (TPR), some caregivers at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs say the filmâ??s graphic, stress-inducing content could trigger PTSD episodes among its audience of veterans. â??Some are going to watch it. Few will,â?? Henry Peterson, a chaplain at the Department of Veterans Affairs in San Diego, told TPR. â??It could bring up some memories they that donâ??t want to deal with. â?¦It could bring up some memories they may need to deal with.â?? Per VA statistics, about 15 percent of Vietnam veterans suffer from PTSDâ??and about 30 percent have experienced it in their lifetime. VA psychologist Tina Mayes, on the other hand, told TPR that PTSD can be triggered by just about anythingâ??a sound, smell, news report. That said, Mayes noted that â??â?¦ the majority of veterans that I work with, when their symptoms are high, theyâ??re actively avoiding any media.â?? Thankfully, PBS and the VA have partnered to provide support services to any veteranâ??from the Vietnam era or any other, for that matterâ??to cope with whatever psychological trauma the documentary may dredge up. These include a crisis hotline, as well as one where veterans can simply connect with other veterans in need. As TPR notes, the VA has offered similar PTSD outreach services in the past, when films like Saving Private Ryan premiered in theaters." "On a day full of criticism from Donald Trump, political protests, linked arms, players taking a knee or not coming on the field at all during the national anthem, and renewed pleas for unity from the league, NBC and the NFL took a ratings hit on Sunday Night Football. In metered market numbers, the primetime matchup that saw the Washington Redskins beat the Oakland Raiders 27-10 snared an 11.6/20, the worst SNF has performed this season so far. Itâ??s an 8% dip from the early numbers of last weekâ??s game, Atlantaâ??s 34-23 win over Green Bay. Amid cheers and boos from fans at FedEx Field in Maryland last night, the third week of the SNF season declined 10% from early numbers of the comparable game of last year on September 25, 2016. Sundayâ??s SNF peaked with a 12.r5/20 during the second quarter from 9-9:30 PM ET. Still, NFL ratings are down double-digits this season so far after taking a similar tackle-for-loss last year. These SNF numbers come on top of a tense Sunday that saw games across the nation under a new spotlight: how would teams respond to Trumpâ??s blasts of Friday at a speech in Alabama and on social media. Started by currently unemployed quarterback and then San Francisco 49er Colin Kaepernick more than a year ago, several NFL players have been publicly protesting police brutality and racial injustice by not standing for the national anthem It was a move the ex-Celebrity Apprentice host and football fan Trump decried, though the ever-ratings conscious POTUS later said in a tweet Sunday that linking arms was OK."
