Carl Cletus Bowles was serving concurrent state and federal sentences at Oregon State Penitentiary, one of which was for murder. In Part 1 of Catching Cletus we learn that he and another ex-convict had gone on a four-day multi-state crime spree in 1965, robbing a motel and raping the desk clerk, committing a brazen mid-day bank robbery in Portland, Oregon, killing a Sheriff’s Deputy in Eugene, kidnapping multiple families, and fleeing from authorities through Oregon, California, and Nevada. Both men were sentenced to life in prison and were never to be considered for parole. In Part 2, the conclusion of this case, we learn that in 1974, Bowles somehow acquired a conjugal visit pass, which he used as cover to escape custody and act out a sequel, of sorts, to his earlier crimes.
