This week, Trevor conducts a solo review of Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury's, The Deep House (2021)!
A French horror film, The Deep House (2021) is a slickly shot, underwater haunted house film with a novel concept and a terrific ending.
Somewhat soggy in its middle portions, and lacking in scares, The Deep House is ambitious and creative, but ultimately fails to truly impress or engage.

This week, Trevor conducts a solo review of James Glickenhaus', McBain (1991)!
In a shocking (and disappointing) turn of events, Trevor learns that the film McBain (1991) actually has ZERO connection to character/movies of the same name featured in The Simpsons.

This week, Trevor conducts a solo review of Sam Hargrave's, Extraction 2 (2023)!
Headlined by Chris Hemsworth, Extraction 2 (2023) is a ballistic action sequel, courtesy of former stuntman turned directior, Sam Hargrave.
Featuring an incredibly slick, 21 minute and 7 second long “oner,” or one-take action sequence, Extraction 2 successfully ups the action ante when compared to the first film, though sadly only for as long as that splendid sequence lasts.
Thin in terms of plot and characterization, Extraction 2 sadly repeats many of the same emotional beats from the first film, and rarely outright exceeds the action spectacle of the original outside of the aforementioned one-take sequence.
A quality action film through and through, Extraction 2 stands head and shoulders above your average RedBox actioner, though it overstays its welcome somewhat, and occasionally feels as if it should have been a brilliant 21 minute short rather than a 2 hour Netflix feature.

This week, Trevor conducts a solo review of Ernesto Diaz Espinoza's, Fist of the Condor (2023)!
A slick martial arts film from Chile, Fist of the Condor (2023) is the fifth collaboration between director Espinoza and star Marko Zaror.
Paying homage to both old school kung fu films, and shonen anime such as Fist of the North Star, Fist of the Condor delivers the expected thrills and feats of physicality that one would expect, however perhaps its most interesting aspect comes not in the form of action, but rather its structure and editing.
Presented as a series of chapters, Fist of the Condor's episodic style, frequent cutaways, use of inner monologue, and frequent use of slow motion and time distortion, feel evocative of anime to a degree that is seldom seen in live-action film.
Not the best collaboration between director Espinoza and star Zaror, nor the worst, Fist of the Condor is nevertheless, both stylish and compelling enough to warrant a watch, and will hopefully serve to draw more fans to Marko Zaror's body of work in the wake of his turn as Chidi in John Wick: Chapter 4 (2023).

This week, Trevor is joined by his brother Matt to review Michael B. Jordan's, Creed III (2023)!
Directed by franchise star, Michael B. Jordan, Creed III (2023) is the latest film in the Rocky/Creed series of films.
The first Creed film to not feature Sylvester Stallone or the character of Rocky Balboa, Creed III suffers from a bit of an identity crisis in the form of attempting to strike out on its own and forge a new path, while simultaneously deliberately referencing elements from earlier films in the series.
While the film is stylish in presentation, and attempts to examine some legitimately interesting contemporary themes regarding modern masculinity, the overall execution of the narrative in Creed III is deeply flawed, in frustrating ways.
Strangely rushed in its 2nd half, and lacking in confidence and consistency in its characterizations, Creed III is an ambitious, but unfortunately well below average entry in the Rocky/Creed series.

This week, Trevor does a solo review of Hideaki Anno's, Shin Kamen Rider (2023)!
The latest film in the “Shin” series of films, each a reimagined version of a long-running Japanese media franchise from director Hideaki Anno, Shin Kamen Rider (2023) is a remake of/tribute to Shotaro Ishinomori's original Kamen Rider TV series and manga from the 70's.
Filled with the director's signature visual flair, science jargon, and heady, philosophical diatribe, Shin Kamen Rider is very much an Anno production, through and through.
Episodically structured in a similar manner to Shin Ultraman (2022), and immensely crowd pleasing in fits and spurts, Shin Kamen Rider is somewhat of an uneven experience, with occasional moments of brilliance that are unfortunately spaced out across a great deal of material that lacks cohesion.
An enjoyable watch, Shin Kamen Rider is a very good film among a “trilogy” of truly great films.
