  • Torque (2004)

    linktr.ee/CatchingUpOnCinema

This April at Catching Up On Cinema, we'll be scraping the bottom of the barrel and reviewing “The Awful Aughts”!

This week Trevor and Kyle review Joseph Kahn's, Torque (2004)!

A motorcycle themed action film from one of the producer's of The Fast and the Furious films, Torque is a delightfully gaudy distillation of some of the uglier visual and action choreography trends of the aughts.

Directed by highly acclaimed music video director Kahn, the film is highly ambitious in it's action design and editing, boasting some stunts and shots that are laudable in their creativity and absurdity.

Terribly acted, and often hideous to look at, Torque nevertheless proves to be a highly entertaining and nonsensical actioner, offering  both ironic and sincere thrills in equal measure.

  • Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2 (2000)

    linktr.ee/CatchingUpOnCinema

This April at Catching Up On Cinema, we'll be scraping the bottom of the barrel and reviewing “The Awful Aughts”!

Every week this month, we'll be reviewing crappy movies from the 2000's, beginning with Joe Berlinger's, Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2 (2000)!

An ill-conceived follow up/cash-in of the massively successful The Blair Witch Project (1999), the film is notorious for being a rushed, confusing, messy, and moreover quite boring horror sequel.

While well acted and possessed of a couple of good ideas, the film is edited in a borderline incomprehensible manner, and sadly lacks any real teeth or punch, resulting in a sloppy film that offers very little logic or subtlety when it comes to it's core mystery.

Sadly, due to a technical issue, Trevor's audio was lost during the initial recording session with Kyle, resulting in this episode being a truncated, solo offering from Trevor.

Sorry folks, we'll do better next time. Promise.

  • Pandorum (2009)

    linktr.ee/CatchingUpOnCinema

This week, Trevor and Kyle Catch Up On Christian Alvart's, Pandorum (2009)!

A high concept sci-fi action thriller, the film concerns a group of space faring amnesiacs awaking from hyper sleep to find themselves adrift in the cosmos, and beset upon by a horde of rampaging cannibal monsters.

Starring Dennis Quaid and Ben Foster, as well as featuring MMA veteran Cung Le in one of his earlier film performances, the film boasts strong performances in both acting and in terms of it's occasional spurts of intense stunt work.

While the film's script boasts many fascinating ideas and concepts, it's odd balance of action and psychological horror results in a somewhat flat experience that largely fails to find it's footing.

  • Alpha Dog (2006)

    linktr.ee/CatchingUpOnCinema

This week, Kyle introduces Trevor to Nick Cassavetes', Alpha Dog (2006)!

Based on the true story of the kidnapping and murder of Nick Markowitz, (here named “Zack Mazursky” and played by a young Anton Yelchin) the film is a unique crime drama that sees dumb young men making increasingly dumb decisions that ultimately result in their mutual destruction.

Populated with an all-star cast of young up and comers, as well as boasting surprisingly effective turns from veterans Bruce Willis and Sharon Stone, the film is a well acted and well constructed crime drama that manages to remain highly watchable despite it's largely unlikable cast of characters.

Equal parts frustrating and tragic, the film manages to be secretly brilliant in it's dumbness, presenting itself as being fully aware of the gross incompetence and ugliness of it's denizens, while boldly standing by on the sidelines as they ride the inertia of their apathy poor decisions on a downward spiral towards oblivion.

  • Aragami (2003)

    linktr.ee/CatchingUpOnCinema

This week, Trevor sits down for a solo review of Ryuhei Kitamura's, Aragami (2003)!

Produced as one half of the “Duel Project,” a collaboration between directors Ryuhei Kitamura and Yukihiko Tsutsumi, the film was constructed under a series of strict guidelines, namely:

The film had to take place in a single location.

The film had to feature a “duel” as part of it's main plot.

The film had to be shot in one week.

Starring Takao Osawa and Masaya Kato, Aragami (2003) concerns a young samurai being cared for an then forced to do battle with an immortal swordsman in the hopes that the latter can be freed from his mortal coil in glorious battle.

Somehow managing to feel overlong at a scant 78 minutes in length, the film suffers from a repetitive midsection, but is otherwise a handsome and charismatic little action film that wears it's influences and enthusiasm on it's sleeves.

  • Conan the Barbarian (1982)

    linktr.ee/CatchingUpOnCinema

This week, Catching Up On Cinema is joined by Kyle's brother Nik to review John Milius', Conan the Barbarian (1982)!

Based on the popular pulp fiction character created by author Robert E. Howard, the film is a violent, mythic tale of swords and sorcery.

Hot on the heels of his star making turn in the documentary, Pumping Iron (1977), the film serves as one of Arnold Schwarzenegger's earliest starring roles.

Financially back by powerhouse producers Dino De Laurentiis and Edward R. Pressman, written by Oliver Stone, and directed by Hollywood wild man, John Milius, the film is a massive and thoughtfully conceived experience, confident in it's intent and tone.

Brandishing production design by Alien (1979) designer Ron Cobb, and a magnificent, operatic score composed by Basil Poledouris, the film dazzles the eyes and ears during it's numerous, wordless interludes.

Packed with talent on the screen and behind the scenes, the film is a near timeless adventure epic that has was massively successful at it's time of release, and has since gone on to be remembered as one of Schwarzenegger's better films.

  • Catching Up On Cinema Presents: Coffee Talk

    linktr.ee/CatchingUpOnCinema

This week on Catching Up On Cinema, Kyle and Trevor sit down for a casual, unfocused discussion, a “Coffee Talk” if you will.

Instead of focusing on analyzing a single film this week, the format of today's episode is that of a casual conversation between friends, catching up on the film's they've watched recently.

Movies discussed in this episode include Matt Reeves' upcoming The Batman (2022) as well as his Planet of the Apes films, The Last Duel, Possession, and C.H.U.D.

This show could very well end up being an isolated experiment, but regardless, we hope you all enjoy it.

    Thanks for listening.
