This February at Catching Up On Cinema, is “Ladies' Night”!
All month long we'll be reviewing action movies headlined by women!
This week, Trevor reviews Ridley Scott's, GI Jane (1997)!
Starring 2025 Best Actress Oscar nominee Demi Moore, GI Jane (1997) was a high profile military action-thriller released at the peak of Moore's box office draw and success. Largely remembered as a meme, the butt of gags and jokes the film is a handsomely shot and somewhat unexpected entry in director Ridley Scott's prolific filmography.
Demi Moore has been acting in major Hollywood productions since the 1980's. While it is only this year, 2025, that she has been nominated for prestigious awards for acting, coming in the form of her critically acclaimed performance in Coralie Fargeat's, The Substance (2024), her filmography is highly diverse, seeing the actress take on a wide range of roles, ranging from the comedic, to the grotesque.

All month long we'll be reviewing action movies headlined by women!
This week, Trevor reviews Taylor Sheridan's, Those Who Wish Me Dead (2021)!
Starring internationally renowned actress Angelina Jolie, amid an all-star ensemble cast as directed by Yellowstone showrunner and famed screenwriter Taylor Sheridan, Those Who Wish Me Dead (2021) is a slick, but somewhat forgettable action-thriller from the same day theater-to-streaming release schedule era of Warner Bros./HBO Max.
Angelina Jolie has consisted acted in both blockbuster action films and intimate dramas since the 1980's, with 2024 marking the high profile release of Maria (2024), wherein she earned critical acclaim for her portrayal of Maria Callas. Additionally, Jolie has moved into directing films in recent year, earning critical acclaim for several of her productions.

This week, Trevor conducts a solo review Johnnie To and Ching Siu-Tung's, The Heroic Trio (1993) and Executioners (1993)!
Starring the trio of prestigious Hong Kong starlets, Anita Mui, Maggie Cheung, and Michelle Yeoh, the pair of films were a box office smash in Asia in the early 90's, and was just recently inducted into the Criterion collection via a fabulous new 4k transfer.
Singer/actress Anita Mui sadly passed away in 2003, however her cultural footprint remains vast, and in fact a biopic and documentary were made about her in recent years.
Maggie Cheung has been a fixture in Hong Kong cinema since the 80's, earning critical acclaim in her later career collaborations with director Wong Kar-wai.
Like her costars Mui and Cheung, Michelle Yeoh has been a fixture of Hong Kong and Chinese cinema for decades now, however in more recent years, beginning in the late 90's, her popularity and prominence in film markets outside of Asia has grown by leaps and bounds, culminating in her recently receiving an Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance in Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022).
