In this episode we continue our discussion of the Third Article of the Apostle Creed focusing on the conception of Christ in the womb of the Virgin Mary and the doctrine of the "Hypostatic Union." While setting forth the truth of the mystery the Catechism of the Council of Trent warns that such a study should not be undertaken with "curious inquisitiveness" but rather only by those that are ready for a "mature consideration." We take a brief look at two articles from the Tertia Pars of the Summa Theologica (IIIa Q. 23 A.4 and Q. 2. A. 6)
In this episode we begin our study of Article III of the Catechism "Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost". Of particular interest is the fact that although every act of God that is extrinsic to Himself proceeds from the Trinity as one, nonetheless in our Creed the conception of Christ is ascribed to the Holy Ghost. We explore three reasons that St Thomas Aquinas gives for this in the Summa Theologica Tertia Pars., Q. 32. A. 2
In today's episode we finish the second article of Faith, set forth in the Catechism of the Council of Trent, focusing specifically on the words "His only Son Our Lord." In addition to reading the Catechism, we also look at several chapters of the Compendium Theologiae of St Thomas Aquinas. (e.g. Chapters 37-40) St Thomas explains how there is a Word in God.
In this episode we read the short section from the Catechism concerning the word Christ (Χριστοσ) and how this word is especially applied to our Lord and Savior Jesus. Jesus Christ is preeminently a priest prophet and king and therefore by the figure of speech known as "antonamasia" is called "Christ."
In this episode we read from The Catechism of the Council of Trent concerning the significance and pre-eminent suitability of the name "Jesus" as applied to the God Man, the son or Mary. Additionally, we explore St Thomas Aquinas' explanation of this name in the "Tertia Pars" of the Summa Theologica, Q. 37 A.2
In this episode we begin our study of the second article of faith in the Apostles Creed "And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, Our Lord. We read the opening general remarks concerning this article from the Catechism concerning the advantages and the necessity of faith in this article. In addition we discuss an article from the Summa Theologica (Ia IIae Q. 81, a. 1) concerning the transmission of original sin
In this episode of exploring the Catechism of the Council of Trent in a year, we conclude our study of the first artilcle of faith by discussing the words "of all things visible and invisible. The CCT explains that God does not only create, bt he also lovingly governs the things He created by directing each thing to the good as to its proper end. We take a brief look at the Summa Theologica Q. 103, a. 1 as well as Q. 45. a. 6
In this episode we discuss the phrase in the first article of the Creed Creator of Heaven and Earth ("factorem caeli et terrae"). God is the exemplar of all things he Created. He is also the final end of all things.
In this episode we read and discuss the Catechism in its treatment of the word "Almighty" in the first article of the Creed. When we say God is almighty we exclude from Him the power of doing things which are really the actions of things that are weak, such as lying or being deceived. We also discuss how the word almighty presupposes and encompasses all the other attributes of God such as his infinity and his omniscience.
In this episode we finish our discussion of the word "Father" in the creed. We discuss what the word contains with regard to God Himself and doctrine of the Holy Trinity. Aiding our discussion of the Catechism we look at the Summa Theologica in the First Part Q. 27, a. 1 and 2 regarding the existence of two "processions" within God. We also look at Q. 32 a.3 concerning the "five notions" in God.
