When you’re sick with a cold, flu, or illness, recovery can feel extra vulnerable. Weakness, isolation, and self-pity can open the door to relapse. In this episode, I share why being under the weather is spiritually dangerous for a Catholic man in recovery—and what practical steps help guard against acting out. I also reflect on the Feast of the Passion of St. John the Baptist, who stood firm against disordered desire, and I open up about my own struggles with relapse while sick.

In this episode of "Breaking Through Denial for a Better Life of Freedom and Integrity," we dive deep into the insidious nature of denial, that powerful internal whisper that keeps us from facing uncomfortable truths about ourselves and our lives. We explore how denial acts as an "illness of escape," shielding us from pain while simultaneously trapping us in a cycle of unmanageability.

We uncover 8 common forms of denial with the rational, internal dialogue and consequences, from minimization ("It's not that bad") and rationalization ("I have a good reason for this") to comparison ("I'm not as bad as...") and the deceptive "one more time" syndrome. Understanding these voices is the first step to silencing them.

Most importantly, we illuminate 20 ways on how denial profoundly violates our Catholic morals and values. It stands in stark opposition to the core tenets of truth, honesty, charity, prudence, and humility, severing our genuine connection with God and others. We look at the ways denial affects ourselves and those closest to us.  We draw upon powerful Bible verses (including Psalm 51, Proverbs 28:13, 1 John 1:8-10, James 1: 22-24, Luke 8:17 and more) and wisdom from the Catechism of the Catholic Church and the Saints to underscore the spiritual imperative of embracing truth.

We also find profound inspiration in the life of Saint Benedict of Nursia. His radical commitment to confronting temptation—famously throwing himself into a thorny bush to overcome lust—and his establishment of monastic life rooted in humility, obedience, and community, offer a powerful blueprint for breaking through denial and living a life of authentic holiness. His life beautifully illustrates the first step of recovery: admitting powerlessness, not as weakness, but as the gateway to God's all-sufficient grace.

Join us as we begin this journey of uncovering the truth, embracing vulnerability, and stepping into the profound freedom and wholeness that God desires for us.

Reflection Question: Related to lustful behavior, where might you be resisting a difficult truth?

Action Step: Pray Psalm 139:23-24: "Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting." Journal your reflections.

This episode tackles the profound question: "Why?  Why do I keep doing this?  Why can't I stop?" We dive deep into the roots of problematic sexual behavior, moving beyond shame to understand the complex interplay of factors that drive us.   There are 7 "Why's" outlined to help you learn that these struggles often stem from misdirected natural instincts, emotional dysregulation and unmet human needs, rather than just a simple "lack of willpower."

We explore the brain's reward system and how behaviors can "hijack" the brain, creating powerful cravings that make breaking free incredibly difficult. Discover how early wounds and traumas, along with the pervasive influence of modern culture, contribute to these patterns. Drawing from Catholic wisdom, we frame this battle within the context of concupiscence—our wounded human nature inclined to do evil —and the constant call to spiritual battle.

"My God, my God, why have You forsaken me?"  – Psalm 22:1-2.  Have you ever felt abandoned by God?  "How long, O Lord? Will You forget me forever?"  – Psalm 13:1-2.  Have you ever wondered when God would heal you?   "If God loves me, why am I still struggling?"  Does it feel like the problematic behavior is forgotten by Our Lord?  

In this episode, Steve covers those feelings as well as the shame that comes along with it.  He covers the double life we live, the discouragement we feel, the danger of numbing the pain, betrayal of wife and marriage and the call to action for healing.  Plenty of hope is offered along with helpful tips and suggestions.

 In this episode, we tackle the concept of negative sobriety—when someone merely avoids acting out but doesn’t pursue real transformation. White-knuckling through temptation is unsustainable.  Sober is not well.  Jesus calls us to have life and have it abundantly.  We have to get past not acting out and grow in virtue so that doing the right thing becomes second nature.
