  • S7 E6: 100 Seconds to Midnight: Bees and the Environment
You can reach me on the website at www.causeofdeath100secs.net or you can email me at [email protected]. My Link Tree can be found at: https://linktr.ee/CauseofDeathpod Bees pollinate about a third of the fruits, nuts and vegetables that we eat every day. There are about 20,000 bee species in the world and 4,000 of those species are in the US. More than 2,000 of the US species are in decline and half are facing extinction. Today, I’m going to talk about bees and their importance as pollinators, and what would happen if they weren’t around anymore. It’s 90 seconds to midnight and not only could several ecosystems fail, but we could face a critical global food shortage if we don’t save one important pollinator, the bee. • S7 E5: 100 Seconds to Midnight: Super Eruptions
There have been rumors about Yellowstone being overdue for a super volcanic eruption circulating for years, but is there actually a timer on super eruptions? Can we predict that? And what would the consequences of a super eruption be? It’s 90 Seconds to Midnight and the earth is rumbling with volcanic activity. Could any of these eruptions mean the end of life as we know it? • S7 E4: 100 Seconds to Midnight: Global Terrorism
The US doesn’t experience much terrorism, we’ve had several attacks on US soil, but for the most part, we’ve had far less than other countries experience. In modern day terrorist attacks, the goal is to spread fear by directing violence against innocent victims. These attacks can be initiated by a government, a radical group, liberationists or “freedom fighters”. They attack anywhere with no warning making people wonder, “Could I be next?” You can reach me on the website at www.causeofdeath100secs.net or you can email me at [email protected]. • S7 E3: 100 Seconds to Midnight: Global Change and Emerging Disease
I’m often asked to talk about Global Warming, my answer to that is that I do. I talk about it in almost every 100 Seconds to Midnight episode. Global Warming either influences or affects just about everything that makes the clock tick down in one way or another. Today, I’m going to talk about global warming again. Specifically, how it affects infectious disease. It’s 90 seconds to midnight and across the world, the temperature is rising. Not only are old diseases rearing their heads, but new diseases are making their way into humanity. They’re coming with a vengeance, and we are not prepared. • S7 E2: 100 Seconds to Midnight: Demons and Disease
For hundreds of years before Germ Theory was discovered, people were trying to find an explanation for the plagues and pestilence that followed them. As millions succumbed to the Black Plague, leprosy, rabies, and tuberculosis, there was no rhyme or reason for the death and destruction. They didn’t understand bacteria, viruses or parasites. Even through the 1800s, people thought that disease was caused by the wrath of some vengeful god, or a curse from an evil foe. Not only that, but they believed that the people who contracted these diseases were possessed of some demon. They turned into vampires or werewolves. • S6 E9: 100 Seconds to Midnight: The Story of the Sixth Mass Extinction
Hello and welcome to Cause of Death – 100 Seconds to Midnight. I’m your host, Jackie Moranty. In the last 50 years we’ve lost more than 4,000 species that are vital to their habitats. These animals played an important role in the support of their ecosystems. Some were predators and some were prey, but they all had one natural enemy: Man. As humans grew in numbers, these animals were overhunted, exposed to pesticides, and driven into smaller and smaller habitats. The land was needed for the King of the Beasts. It’s 90 seconds to midnight, and our wildlife suffers under the heavy burden of human encroachment. From logging to drilling for oil, overdevelopment of wild lands to water diversion, animals are disappearing, never to be seen again. • S6 E8: We All Go Around in Circles: The Story of Whirling Diease
Hello and welcome to Cause of Death – 100 Seconds to Midnight. I’m your host, Jackie Moranty. I changed my mind mid-script. I decided that I needed to finish this season with a 100 Seconds to Midnight Episode on extinction. I thought that would be more appropriate, so this week, I’m going to talk about the last disease in this season. We’re going to look at Whirling Disease in Fish. Let’s begin with etiology and pathology. This will be a new pathogen for us. Myxobolus cerebralis is a myxozoan parasite. Whirling disease is caused by the actinosporean spores of the parasite Myxobolus cerebralis. This parasite has a complex two-host lifecycle. The parasite alternates between the sludge worm, Tubifex tubifex and the salmonid host. I’ve hit 15,000 downloads! That’s a big deal.
