While playing chess during a blinding blizzard, Anchorage's police chief, George Teller,  and his friend Dr. William Bertram hear a cry for help.   They find a man in a snowdrift who doesn't know who he is or how he got there.   They name him George Williams, and Teller gives him a job.  He soon becomes an excellent policeman, but still cannot remember his real name - until he is sent to help the Juneau police unravel the mystery of a human skeleton found in a deep well.
